Job Description

Director of Clinical Services – Mental Health Regional Public Health Service | Kimberley Region, Western Australia Total remuneration package AUD $592,536 – $704,991 p.a.

We are partnering with a large regional public health service delivering acute, community and specialist mental health services across one of Australia's most iconic and geographically vast regions. The Mental Health and Alcohol & Other Drug (AOD) service spans an acute inpatient psychiatric unit at the region's principal hospital, a network of community-based mental health and AOD teams, and consultation-liaison psychiatry into smaller regional and remote hospitals. The service is delivered in close partnership with Aboriginal community-controlled health organisations, primary care, and non-government providers, with a genuine commitment to culturally safe, community-embedded care.

Your role

  • Provide clinical governance and senior clinical leadership across the region's Mental Health and AOD services
  • Partner with the Regional Manager of Mental Health and AOD to shape service strategy, clinical practice, and workforce development
  • Lead the delivery of psychiatric services across the acute inpatient unit and community teams, including consultation-liaison into regional hospitals
  • Maintain a clinical caseload delivering comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and evidence-based psychiatric care
  • Provide RANZCP-aligned supervision, mentorship, and professional support to psychiatry trainees and the broader medical workforce
  • Ensure clinical practice aligns with the WA Mental Health Act (2014), national mental health standards, and Commonwealth and State strategic priorities
  • Influence the design and delivery of mental health services across a genuinely diverse and geographically dispersed regional environment

What's on offer

  • Total remuneration package AUD $592,536 – $704,991 p.a., dependent on experience and package composition
  • Employer superannuation contributions
  • Professional development leave and allowance
  • Generous annual and personal leave provisions
  • WA Health salary packaging with full FBT concessions, including options for novated leasing, meal and entertainment benefits
  • District Allowance and Remote Area Housing entitlements aligned to regional/remote WA classification
  • Attractive relocation support package for the right candidate
  • Visa sponsorship available for eligible international candidates, including 482, 494 (Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional), and DAMA pathways where applicable — with genuine regional pathways to permanent residency
  • Flexibility around clinical, leadership, education and service development components of the role

Requirements

  • Unconditional Specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Psychiatrist
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP)
  • Senior clinical and/or medical leadership experience, with demonstrated ability to provide effective clinical governance and lead multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong generalist psychiatric skills, with experience across mental health and alcohol & other drug services
  • Genuine commitment to medical education, workforce development, and culturally safe practice, particularly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clinical, operational and community stakeholders across a geographically dispersed service environment
  • SIMGs already on an approved RANZCP specialist pathway are welcome to apply
  • Australian working rights, or eligibility for employer-sponsored visa
  • National Police Check and compliance with WA Health immunisation and pre-employment screening requirements

Life in the Kimberley

The Kimberley is one of Australia's true frontier lifestyle regions — a vast, breathtaking landscape of red desert gorges, tropical coastline, ancient rock art, cattle country, and pristine islands, home to some of the oldest continuous living cultures on earth. Life here is genuinely different: warm year-round, unhurried, deeply community-oriented, with a small-town social fabric and a spectacular natural playground on your doorstep — think fishing, boating, camping, four-wheel-driving, and access to landscapes most Australians only ever see on postcards. For clinicians and their families, the region offers a rare combination of professional impact, cultural richness, and a lifestyle that simply isn't available in metropolitan Australia. It is also one of the strongest regions in the country for accessing enhanced regional allowances, subsidised housing, and genuine long-term residency pathways for international candidates.
