The Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning provides leadership for the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of comprehensive faculty development programs that promote excellence in teaching and learning. The Director fosters a culture of evidence-informed, innovative, and inclusive teaching by supporting faculty across all stages of their academic careers through consultation, programming, mentoring, communities of practice, and scholarly teaching initiatives.
Working collaboratively with academic leadership, instructional designers, librarians, simulation faculty/staff, and the faculty at large, the Director advances institutional priorities related to teaching excellence, educational innovation, and faculty engagement. The Director is responsible for the daily operations of the Center and supports implementation of the University's strategic priorities for teaching and learning.
Supervisor Responsibility
The Director reports to the Associate Dean for Teaching Excellence and Innovation and provides leadership for the Center for Teaching and Learning. The Director supervises instructional designers, faculty teaching fellows, and others as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership and Administration
- Develop and implement the center's strategic plan, annual goals, and program priorities in alignment with the University's strategic plan.
- Lead the day-to-day operations of the Center for Teaching and Learning.
- Identify emerging trends and best practices in higher education and translate them into practical faculty development initiatives.
- Assist in planning and managing the center’s budget and resources.
- Develop assessment strategies to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of center programming and continuously improve services based on data.
- Provide leadership and strategic direction for instructional design services to ensure high-quality, evidence-based course design and continuous improvement of teaching and learning.
Faculty Development
- Develop and oversee a comprehensive teaching excellence framework.
- Design and deliver workshops, seminars, and microcredentialing programs that promote evidence-based teaching practices.
- Coordinate faculty orientation, onboarding, and ongoing professional development for new and continuing faculty.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate Faculty Learning Communities, communities of practice, mentoring initiatives, and peer observation and feedback programs that promote continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
- Provide confidential individual consultations to faculty on course design, instructional strategies, learner engagement, assessment, feedback, inclusive teaching, and educational technology.
- Develop a faculty consultation model that leverages instructional designers as educational partners in course design, educational technology, and instructional innovation.
- Assist faculty in evaluating teaching effectiveness using multiple measures.
Teaching Excellence and Innovation
- Evaluate and recommend emerging educational technologies that support effective teaching and learning.
- Partner with library services, simulation personnel, academic leadership, and other university departments to integrate teaching resources and support services.
- Support faculty in the effective and ethical integration of educational technologies, artificial intelligence, simulation, and other emerging instructional tools.
- Collaborate with instructional designers and academic leaders to identify faculty needs and align instructional design services with academic priorities and innovative strategies.
- Collaborate with continuing education support staff to advance microcredentialing initiatives.
Assessment, Scholarship, and Other
- Promote evidence-informed teaching practices through the dissemination and application of current educational research.
- Oversee processes that support the quality review and continuous improvement of online and hybrid courses.
- Prepare annual reports demonstrating the Center's impact on faculty development, teaching excellence, and institutional priorities.
- Collaborate with the directors of research and scholarship to promote Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) through consultation, mentoring, writing support, and dissemination of scholarly work.
- Contribute to accreditation efforts related to teaching and faculty development.
- Serve on university committees and workgroups as assigned.
- Participate in professional organizations and contribute to the scholarship and practice of educational development.

Required Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated expertise in evidence-based teaching, faculty development, educational development, and adult learning.
- Strong knowledge of instructional design principles and best practices for online and face-to-face education.
- Experience facilitating workshops and professional development for faculty.
- Excellent consultation, coaching, mentoring, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to build trust and maintain confidentiality while working with faculty.
- Knowledge of assessment methods for evaluating teaching effectiveness and faculty development programs.
- Familiarity with learning management systems, educational technologies, artificial intelligence, and emerging instructional tools.
- Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and university leadership.
Education and Experience
- Doctoral degree (PhD, EdD, DNP, or related terminal degree) required.
- Unencumbered active nursing license to practice as a registered nurse and advanced practice registered nurse in primary state of residence.
- Active APRN certification in area of specialty required.
- Minimum five years of experience in higher education teaching.
- Experience leading or guiding faculty development, educational development, instructional design, or teaching and learning initiatives.
- Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching.

Reporting Relationship
Reports directly to the Associate Dean for Teaching Excellence and Innovation.
Work Location
