The Role

Reporting to the Head of Service Delivery, the Director of Casework will ensure that Financial Rights is well positioned, through litigation and casework, to advance its aims and objectives in order to promote access to justice for low income and vulnerable consumers and to foster new thinking that advances consumer interests.

Key responsibilities include:

• Lead, train, coach and mentor your team and foster a culture with Financial Right’s organisational values
• Ensure the strategic use of litigation in order to effect legislative change and improvements in industry practice for the benefit of consumers
• Design, develop and implement the quality control program and accessibility for the casework practice to ensure high quality casework services are provided
• Maintain quality assurance systems and procedures in accordance with relevant changes to legislation, strategic priorities, consistent themes emerging from client feedback and operational requirements
• Monitor trends within the financial services industry, legislative and other relevant changes and, recommend and/or develop appropriate responses in consultation with policy staff and the Head of Service Delivery
• Provide advice to the Head of Service Delivery from a risk management perspective in relation to strategic risks

What you bring:

We are looking for a skilled advocate who understands the interplay between financial services law and public policy and the importance of identifying lasting solutions to systemic problems.

• Demonstrated experience in leading legal teams of more than 5 people
• Have expert knowledge in consumer law, especially in relation to credit, debt and insurance
• Have experience in running a legal practice and particularly strategic casework and litigation in the public interest
• Have eligibility to hold a principal legal practicing certificate in the state of New South Wales, as well as at least 5 years post-admission legal practice experience
• Have a keen sense of how Financial Rights can achieve improved access to justice for people experiencing financial hardship
• Be able to effectively lead the team of passionate staff to achieve meaningful outcomes
• Have high ethical standards, be adaptable, flexible and self-motivated
• You will be motivated by the opportunity to make a difference, consistent with Financial Rights mission
• Successful applicants will be required to undergo a National Police Check as a condition of employment
