Job Description

Under the direction of the Vice President of Facilities Development & Management, the Director of Campus Safety provides the overall direction and day-to-day operation of Campus Safety. The Director of Campus Safety ensures a security presence dedicated to providing a safe and secure campus environment for faculty, staff, and students. The oversight includes all aspects of security operations, facility access, scheduling, administrative management, equipment maintenance, budget development, assets and personnel security, training, investigations, and special event/exhibition security. The Director of Security consults with the VP of Facilities Development & Management for operational improvements and security technology throughout the institute and is responsible for institutional compliance with the Clery Act and other applicable laws and regulations.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Work closely with CSOs including Shift Leaders making sure they all perform at a level that meets departmental standards.
  • Responsible for the hiring and training of new CSOs and preparing weekly schedules ensuring that all shifts have adequate coverage.
  • Provide ongoing in-service training for all current staff members.
  • With the VP: review, develop, write and implement new policies and procedures to continually modernize the department.
  • Actively involved in strategic security planning for special events.
  • Provide safety and security related services to the college community.
  • Respond to emergency calls for service, investigate crime reports.
  • Manage department budget and purchase equipment, uniforms and other supplies as required.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the US Criminal Code and Clery Act.
  • Responsible for overseeing and maintaining the Department’s annual budget, daily crime log and Clery Crime Statistics.
  • Responsible for filing Annual Security Report with Department of Education.
  • Maintains Facilities radio inventory making sure that all staff radios are in working order.
  • Regularly update Campus Safety Manual, Policies & Procedures Guide and Shift Leader Guide. Make appropriate policy & procedures changes as needed.
  • Maintain the CSOs are up to date on policy changes and/or special instructions.
  • On a daily basis works hand in hand with other CalArts staff, faculty and students on various special projects ensuring that all security needs are addressed.
  • Plan and coordinate all security measures in great detail for the Institute's largest events to include, but not limited to, the annual Halloween Party and Graduation.
  • Attend monthly Safety and Disaster Preparedness meetings.
  • Function as a CSO on a daily basis by making required patrols of the campus and by responding to various calls for service as needed.
  • Campus Safety liaison to local law enforcement and school safety professionals.
  • Ability to maintain a cooperative working relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Identify, evaluate and document safety risks and hazards throughout the Institute and take appropriate action to ensure unsafe conditions are corrected in a timely manner.
  • Prepare, maintain and monitor campus safety department records and reports that pertain to safety.
  • Manage and maintain day-to-day campus safety programs, auditing and regulatory recordkeeping and reporting; document and investigate all incidents of property damage, personal injury, safety violations, unsafe conditions and non-compliance activities.
  • Coordinate vendors and/or establish protocols and guidelines to address and find solutions for campus safety issues impacting students, faculty and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Must be well versed in Institute and departmental policies/procedures as well as the laws pertaining to Powers of Arrest and Search/Seizure.
  • Must have a general knowledge of the California Penal Code, as well as California Vehicle Code
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Leadership, mentoring and training skills.
  • Interact effectively with staff, students, faculty and external contacts demonstrating courtesy, professionalism, tack, diplomacy, discretion and good judgment.
  • Maintain composure and make critical decisions during stressful emergency situations.
  • Write accurate, clear and factual incident reports or other documents as needed.
  • May be called upon after hours to deal with campus emergencies on an as-needed basis.
  • Must have working knowledge of the entire facility including the main building, housing, facilities and grounds. Be well versed in Institute Policies & Procedures
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google and Adobe applications
  • Critical thinking skills required

EDUCATION:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in public safety or related field, or significant work experience with increasing responsibility will be considered.
  • Certified in basic First Aid and CPR including Defibrillator Certification
  • P.O.S.T Certificate is preferred.
  • Possess valid California State Guard Card.
  • Have a valid California driver’s license with no restrictions.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum experience of 5 years in the public safety field.
  • Prior management or supervisory experience.
  • Must be able to provide DMV print-out and be able to meet driving record standards set by CalArts' insurance carrier.
  • Working knowledge of the laws pertaining to Powers of Arrest and Search/Seizure.
  • Possess general knowledge of the Penal Code, as well as California Vehicle Code.
  • Experience in a higher education setting is a plus.
