Job Description

A custom manufacturer in Bend has spent nearly five decades earning the loyalty of Central Oregon's builders without an outbound sales motion. Now they're hiring their first dedicated business development professional to build one.

The work is in the field, meeting builders the company isn’t currently winning, and getting into Central Oregon submarkets where it doesn’t fully compete today. The playbook is yours to write from scratch. The role reports to the President with the operating partner from the long-term investment firm as your direct BD mentor. They'll open doors with current clients and trust you to unlock the rest.

The Day-To-Day
The company operates out of a 42,000-square-foot vertically integrated facility where design, engineering, manufacturing, finishing, and installation all happen in-house. It holds a dominant share of new custom home builds in Bend and Central Oregon, with a footprint that reaches into the San Francisco Bay Area and an emerging Portland market through referral and repeat builder relationships.

Days mix builder meetings, jobsite visits, and consistent presence at community events where Central Oregon's construction industry gets to know each other. Inside the company, you'll work most closely with the Sales/Engineering Manager (30 years with the company) and the Primary Estimator, who runs the internal estimating function and converts inbound demand into quoted jobs. The broader leadership team is tenured, with a President at 29 years, HEad of Engineering at 30 years, Controller at 14 years, and an Operations Manager at 12 years, which is a testament to the company's culture.

The Goal
Within 12 months, build meaningful, active relationships with every builder on a curated target list of 20 to 30 accounts (under-penetrated current customers, lapsed customers worth re-engaging, and net-new prospects in markets the company hasn't yet won), and put a repeatable BD playbook in place behind it.

Outcomes You'll Be Responsible For

  • Build relationships with 20 to 30 target builders: Understanding each builder's pain points, knowing what's blocking them from using this company, and earning the trust that warrants calling you back.
  • Build the BD playbook from scratch: Account mapping and target prioritization, cadenced outreach, relationship tracking (formal or informal "mental CRM"), open bid follow-up, and a repeatable process for converting builder awareness into active quoting opportunities.
  • Become the company's external face: Show up consistently at COBA, NKBA, Oregon HBA, Home Shows, golf outings, and industry events. Drive contributor traffic to the facility through builder appreciation lunches and designer tours. Within your first year, the Bend building community recognizes you as this company's face in the field.
  • Partner with leadership on strategy: Bring intelligence back to the President and the Operating Partner on what it will take to win specific builders: pricing pressure, competitive dynamics, decision-makers, and timing.
  • Drive new revenue growth: Convert the relationships you build into quoted jobs and won bids, generating meaningful new revenue from builders the company isn't currently winning.
  • Develop product and process fluency: Ramp on the company's process. Shadow the Sales Manager on estimating. Learn the proprietary estimating software well enough to talk lead times, scheduling, and quoting accurately with builders.

Qualifications

  • 3 to 8 years in B2B relationship-driven sales, business development, territory management, or key account management. Construction, building products, or an adjacent industry where builders are the customer is ideal.
  • Track record of building trust with owner-operators, builders, contractors, or skilled tradespeople, with references that speak to relationship longevity.
  • Comfort building or running outbound pipeline (account mapping, cadenced outreach, prospecting) without daily oversight.
  • Construction or trades literacy. You can walk a jobsite, read basic plans, and speak fluently about schedules, lead times, submittals, and phasing. Adjacent industry exposure (real estate, design, building products) that translates to builder conversations works.
  • Existing ties to Central Oregon strongly preferred. Candidates open to relocating to the Bend area considered where lifestyle alignment is clear.
  • Willingness to learn proprietary estimating software.

Qualities

  • Relationship Gravity: People remember your name after one meeting. Builders want to do business with you before they fully understand the product.
  • Anticipatory Thinking: You read each builder's situation and position the company against what's actually in their way.
  • Constructive Directness: You communicate in metric-minded language: lead times, scheduling, quantification. You're substantive, not showy.
  • Humility: You learn the company's way before suggesting how to change it. Candidates who've shown up wanting to overhaul existing processes haven't lasted here.
  • Ownership: No one is managing your activity. You hold the standard.
  • Community Instinct: COBA, Rotary, EDCO, golf outings: these are where you want to be, not where you have to be.
  • Long-Game Orientation: You're looking to build a career, not make a short stop. Relationships in this market take time.
