Job Description

Director of Bar Support – School of Law

The School of Law at Case Western Reserve University invites applications for a Director of Bar Support Instructor Position beginning July 1, 2026. The Director of Bar Support serves as the primary administrator responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive programming designed to maximize bar passage and support graduates preparing for the bar examination throughout law school and during the bar preparation period after graduation. The position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and works closely with the Director of Academic Support, faculty, and student services staff.

This is a full-time position with one remote day on a twelve-month contract.

Position: Director of Bar Support - Instructor

Starting Date: July 1, 2026

Qualifications: A J.D. degree and at least three years of post-law school law practice and one year of law teaching experience are required.

Term and Renewal: This is for a 12-month contract.

Core Responsibilities

Program Development and Administration

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive bar support program throughout law school and after graduation that is designed to maximize bar passage

  • Coordinate bar preparation initiatives with faculty, the Director of Academic Support, and student services staff

  • Review and assess the law school curriculum to ensure appropriate coverage of bar-tested subjects

  • Participate in relevant professional networks and working groups related to bar preparation and Character and Fitness to stay informed about developments in bar exam content, format, and administration

  • Serve as the primary liaison with the law school’s institutional bar preparation partner, coordinating programming and monitoring student engagement in the program

  • Develop early-intervention strategies to identify students who may benefit from additional bar preparation support and connect them with targeted programming

  • Administer and analyze 1L and 3L diagnostic assessments designed to evaluate students’ bar readiness and use the results to identify students who may benefit from additional bar preparation support.

Teaching and Workshop Development

  • Teach the 3L bar preparation course

  • Conduct summer workshops covering each portion of the bar examination

  • Administer a full-day simulated bar exam experience during the summer for graduates who are taking the July bar exam

  • Develop and coordinate programming designed to help students understand the bar exam and prepare for success, including Character and Fitness programming in collaboration with the Supreme Court of Ohio

  • Develop bar preparation programming accessible to students in the part-time online program

Graduate Bar Preparation Support

  • Work one-on-one with recent graduates preparing for the bar exam, including reviewing practice questions and providing individualized guidance

  • Monitor graduates’ progress in commercial bar preparation courses and reach out to those who appear to be falling behind

  • Conduct proactive outreach to graduates identified as needing additional bar preparation support and provide structured guidance throughout the bar preparation period

  • Maintain regular communications with graduates during the bar preparation period, including reminders, encouragement, and information about available resources

  • Provide targeted support for graduates who previously failed the bar exam and are preparing to retake it

Student Advising and Application Support

  • Assist students with bar exam applications, including questions related to accommodations, Character and Fitness disclosures, and related appeals when necessary

  • Prepare memoranda in support of candidates’ Character and Fitness applications and testify on behalf of students regarding Character and Fitness matters when appropriate

Resource Development

  • Create and maintain bar preparation guidance materials and support resources for students and graduates

  • Develop written and online resources addressing bar exam structure, study planning, and common challenges

  • Create and maintain bar preparation materials within the Student Advising Portal

Assessment and Improvement

  • Monitor bar passage outcomes and assess the effectiveness of bar support initiatives

  • Oversee reporting related to bar passage outcomes, including ABA reporting requirements

  • Make recommendations for program improvements designed to enhance bar success

  • Support the work of the Bar Passage Committee by providing data, program updates, and recommendations

Cross-Departmental Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Director of Academic Support to coordinate academic support and bar preparation initiatives across all years of the curriculum

  • Collaborate with faculty, student services, and administration to support students preparing for the bar exam

  • Communicate bar-related policies, deadlines, and programming to students and graduates

  • Participate in faculty committees

Other duties as assigned. Note that courses are subject to change.

The annual starting base salary range for this position is from $65,640 - $90,000 CWRU considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
