DEFTEC Corporation is seeking a Director of Accounting (Controller) to lead and oversee all accounting operations in support of our growing government contracting portfolio. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining compliance with FAR, DCAA, and federal contract requirements, and strengthening internal controls across the organization. The Controller will serve as a key member of the leadership team, partnering closely with executive leadership to support growth, improve financial processes, and ensure audit readiness. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring both strategic oversight and day-to-day execution.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and revenue recognition
  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes ensuring accuracy and timeliness
  • Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP
  • Manage project accounting, including cost tracking by contract, CLIN, and task
  • Ensure compliance with FAR Part 31, DCAA requirements, and applicable federal regulations
  • Oversee indirect rate structure (fringe, overhead, G&A) and monitor rate performance
  • Support incurred cost submissions (ICS) and audit responses
  • Ensure proper treatment of allowable and unallowable costs
  • Oversee contract billing, including cost-plus, T&M, and fixed-price invoicing
  • Ensure alignment between Unanet project setup, labor charging, and billing
  • Manage WAWF, IPP, Subcontractor and NATO invoicing and reconciliation processes
  • Monitor revenue recognition and backlog reporting
  • Strengthen and maintain internal controls to ensure financial integrity
  • Lead process improvements across accounting and finance operations
  • Ensure audit readiness for DCAA, financial audits, and customer reviews
  • Develop and document accounting policies and procedures
  • Monitor cash flow, receivables, and working capital
  • Support forecasting and financial planning efforts
  • Oversee relationships with banks, auditors, and external financial partners
  • Lead and mentor accounting staff, establishing accountability and development paths
  • Partner with Contracts, Operations, and Program Managers to ensure financial alignment across the organization

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience in a government contracting environment
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • FAR and DCAA compliance
    • Cost accounting standards and indirect rate structures
    • Project-based accounting
  • Experience with Unanet ERP and Paycom
  • Experience with WAWF and IPP invoicing
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA or equivalent certification
  • Experience supporting incurred cost submissions and DCAA audits
  • Familiarity with GSA schedules, CPFF contracts, and rate proposals
  • Experience improving or rebuilding accounting processes in a growing organization
