JOB TITLE: Director of Accounting

DEPARTMENT: Finance

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Finance

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Fulltime, 12 months

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years of public school accounting experience and prior management experience required. Demonstrated ability to form, lead, and develop high-performing teams. Strong knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting required.

Skills: Knowledge of financial recordkeeping laws, regulations, standards, and auditing requirements; knowledge of school law and/or public auditing policies and procedures; strong organizational and communication skills; detail oriented with high degree of accuracy; ability to quantify and illustrate complex financial reports, comparisons, impacts and/or projections; ability to work collaboratively across department functions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS These statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to the position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.

  1. Supervises, oversees, and manages assigned finance and business office staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with district policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding or disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  2. Manages the operations of general accounting, accounts payable, fixed asset accounting, construction accounting, and financial reporting. Ensures district compliance with policies and procedures as well as state and federal law.

  3. Ensures that district financial records, under responsibility, are maintained in compliance with district policies and US GAAP.

  4. Responsible for reviewing monthly/quarterly account reconciliations and other documents to ensure this compliance. Maintains and analyzes various financial reports for internal and external uses and audit purposes.

  5. Directs development, maintenance, and execution of accounting and internal financial controls. Allocates internal costs, maintains E-rate records; prepares and files 1099 forms.

  6. Estimates monthly accounts payable cash requirements for all funds.

  7. Assists with the preparation, validation and submission of year-end financial information to the State Department of Education.

  8. Liaisons with district technology department and software vendors to ensure updated systems and timely resolution of technology issues.

  9. Monitors the district's accounting email inbox to address incoming questions or billing correspondence.

  10. Develops cooperative and functional relationships with district staff and the public; maintains consistent and punctual attendance; ensures job responsibilities are met competently and within established deadlines.

  11. Directs special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

ATTENDANCE STATEMENT:

Able to be in attendance for assigned responsibilities with 95% attendance.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Work is performed inside in a computerized office environment with minimal exposure to extreme environmental conditions or hazardous materials/equipment.
