Position Summary
The Director of Accounting is responsible for the oversight and execution of all accounting operations, including general ledger, financial reporting, and compliance with GAAP. This role leads the accounting function while maintaining direct involvement in key operational activities.
This position functions as a hands-on working manager, responsible not only for supervising staff but also for performing and backstopping critical accounting functions. The Director ensures accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial data while supporting organizational leadership with financial insights and analysis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Reporting
- Oversee and participate in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Manage and execute the monthly close process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
- Review and approve journal entries and account reconciliations
- Coordinate and review balance sheet reconciliations
- Oversee cost center allocations and financial reporting structures
- Manage fixed assets and capital accounting
Cash Management & Disbursements
- Approve weekly accounts payable processing
- Prepare and monitor cash flow projections
- Prepare bi-weekly payroll funding
Revenue & Physician Compensation
- Review monthly revenue entries interfacing into the accounting system
- Review physician call pay in accordance with agreements and coordinate with Human Resources
- Ensure preparation and distribution of monthly call pay invoices to hospital partners
Tax & Compliance
- Prepare and oversee tax filings, including franchise tax and K-1 distributions
- Maintain working knowledge of applicable tax laws and regulatory requirements
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and healthcare-related financial regulations (Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, FMV)
External Partnerships & Reporting
- Serve as primary liaison with external accounting firms and auditors
- Provide required documentation and support for audits and external reporting
- Oversee completion of the annual D&O insurance application
Leadership & Staff Development
- Supervise accounting staff, including Accounts Payable Clerks and Senior Accountant
- Provide training, mentorship, and performance management
- Establish and maintain departmental procedures and internal controls
- Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement
Hands-On Operational Support
- Perform accounting functions as needed to support the team during peak periods or staffing gaps
- Maintain the ability to execute all core departmental responsibilities
- Actively participate in reconciliations, journal entries, and financial analysis
- Ensure quality control through direct involvement in key processes
Strategic & Executive Support
- Partner with the CEO and leadership team on financial analysis and special projects
- Provide insights to support operational and strategic decision-making
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency
Working Conditions
- Office-based, on-site role
- May require extended hours during month-end close, audits, or special projects
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer
- Ability to occasionally lift office materials (up to 15 pounds)

Qualifications

Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required)
- MBA or CPA (preferred)
Experience
- 8–10+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Healthcare experience required (private practice or hospital setting)
- Prior leadership experience managing accounting staff
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting systems, including Sage Intacct
- Understanding of healthcare regulatory and compliance frameworks (Stark, Anti-Kickback, FMV)
- Working knowledge of tax compliance and reporting
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and leadership abilities
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment
- Demonstrated ability to function as a hands-on accounting leader
Licenses and Certifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred
