The purpose of this job is to lead the merchandising efforts across multiple categories of business, to collaborate with leadership and cross functional teams to develop and deliver high quality products that generate consistent year over year sales and sustainable profit growth.

Essential Functions

  1. Lead multiple company category merchandising teams
  2. Provide strong leadership, business strategy, and product vision to a team of category managers and their direct reports
  3. Supervise, train, coach, and mentor team members; regularly conduct performance evaluations and update succession plans
  4. Develop and execute both short and long term merchandising strategies that support the company's strategic growth plans
  5. Create and implement new concepts for product assortments and initiatives that generate continuous profitable growth
  6. Work in partnership with the Chief Merchant to ensure that category teams adhere to the merchandising calendar
  7. Develop and deliver products that support sales goals and ensure the company's relevance and competitiveness in the marketplace
  8. Research and analyze customer and competition trends within the industry to identify emerging products and services that will grow the company brand and drive sales within categories
  9. Collaborate with cross functional partners in store operations, marketing, customer relationship management, and digital to develop category specific strategies that acquire and retain loyal customers
  10. Partner with multiple company teams to ensure that store design, fixtures, marketing, advertising, and related elements are all consistent with the merchandising strategy and overall brand direction
  11. Regularly visit company stores as well as competitors to identify and evaluate opportunities for improvement
  12. Model behaviors that support the company’s common purpose; ensure guests and team members are supported at the highest level
  13. Ensure all activities are in compliance with rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  14. Complete other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business or other related field required
  • Minimum 15 years’ executive level retail merchandising experience required
  • MBA preferred

History

Founded by James Haslam II, the first Pilot gas station was opened in Gate City, Virginia, in 1958. After more than four decades of rapid growth, expansion and partnership, Pilot and Marathon Oil Company entered an agreement to form Pilot Travel Centers in 2001.

Over the years, Pilot Travel Centers experienced significant growth and expanded internationally, opening its first travel center in Canada in 2006. In 2007, Pilot bought Marathon Petroleum’s shares and entered a new partnership with CVC Capital Partner in 2008. Two years later, Pilot Travel Centers and Flying J Inc. entered an agreement, officially creating Pilot Flying J on July 1, 2010.
