What Legal Contributes to Cardinal Health

Legal provides the company with strategic, proactive, practical, and cost-effective legal advice and services to protect the organization’s assets, operations, and image. This function provides legal counsel related to commercial, corporate securities, intellectual property, labor and employment, regulatory law, and other areas. This function also litigates company legal matters, manages outside counsel, and manages legal operations.

Legal provides strategic oversight, leadership, and direction within the Legal function.

Job Summary

Cardinal Health is seeking a practical, business-oriented healthcare attorney to serve as Director, Assistant General Counsel, At-Home Solutions. This role will support a large, growing healthcare business at an exciting point of acquisition, integration, transformation, and operational momentum across At-Home Solutions, including:

• Cardinal Health’s DMEPOS businesses (durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies), which provide medical supplies to patients managing chronic and serious health conditions
• Cardinal Health at-Home, a direct-to-home distributor of medical products and supplies
• VeloCare, Cardinal Health’s hospital-at-home supply chain and logistics solution

This is an opportunity to help shape legal support for businesses that are expanding, integrating recent acquisitions, and building more consistent ways of working across the At-Home Solutions portfolio. The Director will work closely with business leaders, Compliance, Privacy, Marketing, Operations, and other cross-functional partners to bring practical legal judgment, structure, and momentum to important business priorities.

The successful candidate will combine strong legal fundamentals with business practicality, adaptability, and the ability to provide clear options and recommendations that help the business move forward responsibly with speed.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a primary commercial legal partner for At-Home Solutions, providing practical, risk-tailored, business-oriented advice that helps the business evaluate options, understand risk, and execute responsibly.
• Draft, review, and negotiate agreements across customer, supplier, vendor, manufacturer, distribution, services, technology, logistics, and strategic relationships.
• Identify the issues that matter most, communicate risks and options clearly, and provide recommendations that help business leaders make informed decisions.
• Develop practical guardrails and guidance for new and evolving business models, working with Privacy, Marketing, Operations, Sourcing, Sales, Regulatory, Compliance, and other partners as needed.
• Lead programmatic improvements to legal support by thinking systematically across recurring issues, improving templates, playbooks, escalation standards, and self-service tools, and monitoring relevant legal and industry developments.
• Leverage technology (including Harvey and Copilot) and other available resources to make legal guidance, templates, and work product more accessible, consistent, and efficient for the business.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school required.
• Active license to practice law and good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction required.
• 10+ years of relevant healthcare legal experience preferred, ideally with exposure to DMEPOS businesses; can also include healthcare distribution, pharmacy, home healthcare, medical products, technology, logistics, or another highly regulated business.
• Strong commercial contracting experience, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex customer, supplier, services, technology, distribution, or strategic partnership agreements.
• Ability to quickly understand new business models, operational workflows, integration activity, and evolving business priorities.
• Comfort operating in ambiguity, making sound judgment calls with imperfect information, and helping work move forward without requiring step-by-step direction.
• Practical, solution-oriented legal judgment, with the ability to distinguish material risks from theoretical issues, understand operational, financial, customer, and reputational considerations, and provide clear recommendations.
• Ability to balance competing priorities, exercise sound judgment about relative importance, and adapt legal support to businesses in different stages of growth, integration, and operational maturity.
• Ability to operate effectively in a highly matrixed environment, build trusted relationships across functions, and engage proactively with business and functional partners rather than providing legal support in isolation.
• Excellent analytical, drafting, negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Anticipated salary range: $137,400 - $232,320
