Job Description

Provides overall responsibility for the operation and administration of the lab.

OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • The Lab Director is accessible to the laboratory to provide onsite, telephone, or electronic consultation as needed.
  • The Lab Director ensures that testing systems developed and used for each of the test performed in the lab provide quality lab services for all aspects of test performance, which includes the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing.
  • The Lab Director ensures that the physical plant and environmental conditions of the laboratory are appropriate for the testing performed and provide a safe environment in which employees are protected from physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
  • Ensures that the lab is enrolled in an HHS approved proficiency-testing program. The testing samples are tested as required by CLIA, and that results are reviewed as needed and remedial action taken when proficiency results are unacceptable.
  • Ensures that test methodologies selected have the capability of providing the quality of results required for patient care and that verification procedures are adequate to determine the accuracy, precision, and other pertinent performance characteristics of the method.
  • Ensures that the quality control and quality assurance programs are established and maintained to assure the quality of laboratory services provided and to identify failures in quality as they occur.
  • Ensures the establishment and maintenance of acceptable levels of analytical performance for each test system.
  • Ensures that all necessary remedial actions are taken and documented whenever significant deviations from the laboratory’s established performance characteristics are identified and that patient test results are reported only when the system is functioning properly.
  • Ensures that reports of test results include pertinent information required for interpretation.
  • Ensures that consultation is available to the labs clients on matters relating to the quality of the test results reported and their interpretation concerning specific patient conditions.
  • Ensures that a general supervisor provides on-site supervision of high complexity test performance by testing personnel.
  • Ensures that prior to reporting test results personnel are qualified and competent to perform testing.
  • Ensures that an approved procedure manual is available to all personnel responsible for any aspect of the testing process.
  • Specifies in writing the responsibilities and duties of each consultant, supervisor, and testing personnel. Define what examinations and procedures each individual is authorized to perform.
  • Responsible for hiring and scheduling adequate personnel in the lab.
  • Responsible for preparing and implementing a laboratory budget (both capital & operating).
  • Other duties as assigned by the Lab Medical Director and administration.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements for CMS and CLIA.
  • Works with other hospitals and vendors to get competitive pricing and supplies
  • Meets all applicable regulatory requirements, including but not limited to; state, federal and CMS Conditions of Participation requirements.

BASIC SKILLS

  • Basic computer knowledge (experience w/ Word/Excel etc or the willingness to learn) and ability to touch type.
  • Experience with lab information systems or the willingness to learn.
  • Ability to discern color

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or chemical, physical, or biological science
  • Certification as MT(ASCP), or MT(AMT) or the equivalent
  • Current BLS Required
  • 6 years’ experience or training or both in high complexity testing within all sections of the laboratory.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to spend long periods of time on feet.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
