Provides strategic leadership for the Integrated Health Management (IHM) function, aligning health, safety, security, and disability management programs with corporate objectives across Empire’s Retail, Distribution Centre, and E-Commerce operations nationally. Leads and develops the IHM team to ensure the effective implementation of corporate programs, policies, and initiatives that foster healthy, safe, and secure workplaces.
Oversee a team of Claims Management Managers and Specialists responsible for the administration and management of occupational and non-occupational absence claims, ensuring timely and effective case management while minimizing operational impacts and associated costs to the business.
Drives legislative compliance and operational excellence by ensuring health and safety programs, policies, and procedures are implemented consistently across all business units. Promotes a proactive safety culture through regular senior leader engagement focusing on risk reduction, continuous improvement, employee well-being, and the prevention of workplace incidents and injuries.

As the Director, Integrated Health Management
• Lead the overall strategic direction of health, safety, employee risk and claims management strategy across the organization.
• The role is focused on governance, leadership, compliance, and performance.
• Lead the development, implementation and execution of national safety standards, policies, programs, and procedures.
• Build and sustain a strong health and safety culture across all operations.
• Ensure consistency of safety programs across all banners, business units, and provinces.
• Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the organization's safety management system. This is executed in part via an annual strategic roadmap
• Directly manage a team of 6 direct managerial reports and lead a team of 36 safety and claims Specialists
• Coach and influence senior leaders to integrate safety into business decisions
• Regularly analyze accident trends and present data reviewing recent performance, recommending corrective and preventative actions to functional leaders, senior executives and Board of Directors.
• Represent IHM in various corporate projects ensuring safety, and disability management aspects are taken into consideration.
• Engage with key external stakeholders ensuring alignment of Sobeys programs with industry best practices
• Oversee occupational injury claims management programs.
• Support return-to-work and accommodation strategies.
• Monitor workers' compensation performance and costs.
• Drive injury duration reduction and claims cost containment.
• Ensure safety training programs meet legislative and operational requirements.
• Lead the development of audit and inspection programs.
• Monitor compliance and program effectiveness.
• Support crisis management and business continuity planning.
What you have to offer:
• 10+ years of experience managing OHS in a large, multi-faceted organization, preferably in a unionized environment related to retail and/or logistics, with increasing levels of leadership responsibility. Post-secondary degree in a related health and safety field
• University degree in a related or supporting field
• MBA, B.Sc, CCPE, CRSP (Preferred)
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and associated regulations, auditing protocols, and WCB legislation
• Strong business acumen
• Advanced Leadership skills
• High level of communication skills
• Ergonomics, claims management (Preferred)
Working Conditions:
• Office environment
• May be required to lift up to 22 lbs
• Sitting for long periods of time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
• Using a computer keyboard and mouse for long periods of time
• Travel 10-15% of the time is typically required
