About the team you are joining

The Director of Industry Analysis will report to the Senior Vice President, Sustainability and Chief Economist. The Industry Analysis unit is part of the Sustainability and Economics Division which mission is to strive for air transportation’s financial and environmental sustainability. This is a dynamic Division in an effervescent field, where we rely on our analytical strengths and privileged access to airline data to produce stellar research and analysis and provide thought leadership for our industry. We integrate sustainability in all our thinking and endeavours.

The Director of Industry Analysis will be responsible for developing the economic research agenda regarding all aspects of the global economy and the airline industry, in coordination with the SVP, the other workstreams in our Division, and across IATA’s Divisions.

The Director of Industry Analysis will develop the strategic work plan and lead the work across three groups:

Modelling and Assessments: Oversee the quantitative modelling efforts and ensure that the full suite of models form a coherent whole and meet the highest academic standards.

Industry Performance: The industry’s financial performance, cost and revenue developments, impacts of fuel and labor markets, evolving traffic trends, business models, etc.

Economic Analysis: Global and regional macro- and micro-economic developments, such as global GDP, air transport’s contribution to GDP growth, the global network, developments in major economies, etc.

The Director, Industry Analysis and the team will deliver presentations of the industry and global economic outlook to IATA’s internal and external stakeholders, including to regulators. These interactions rely on the quality of our research to gain access to policy makers and help set the agenda for the regulatory impetus concerning our industry as well as providing general thought-leadership.

The Director, Industry Analysis will oversee a team of highly qualified economists.

What your day would be like

Develop and execute the strategic work plan for the Industry Analysis team in conjunction with the Division’s SVP and business goals.

Develop the research agenda for analyzing airlines’ businesses, financial performance, and challenges including decarbonization, oversee our modelling efforts, and drive all relevant economic research topics that are pressing for our industry. Ensure effective data management and access, and timely delivery of research output.

Produce research, forecasts, publications, and presentations to IATA’s internal and external stakeholders. Research shall cover issues such as the global macro-economic environment, global trade, industrial organization, value-chain analysis, aviation in the context of the global transportation sector, structural changes in the industry, cost structures, revenue streams, cost of funds, and more.

Lead the team with an emphasis on its members’ personal development and upskilling, as well as ensuring that all tasks have adequate backup for ascertaining business continuity.

Stand in for the SVP Sustainability and Chief Economist as per need, principally regarding the outlook for our industry.

Coordinate with the regional offices and monitor developments in the regions and in specific countries, and their potential impact on the global economy and the global airline industry.

Ensure that ad hoc requests for industry analyses are met in coherence with the overall advocacy stance;

Integrate sustainability analyses at all levels of our overall industry analysis.

Develop and maintain key relationships internally and externally to promote IATA’s economic analysis of key issues.

We would love to hear from you if

Postgraduate studies in micro- and macro-economics, business, finance, statistics, and related fields, PhD an advantage;

10 years’ experience in economist roles, applying economic and statistical analyses to business and industry issues to be able to provide thought leadership to our industry and to regulators;

An ability to prioritize in a fast-evolving domain and deliver key output under tight deadlines;

Must be analytical and detail- oriented while also grasping context, strategy, and vision on a global level;

Strong stakeholder management and inter-personal skills;

Experience in managing research professionals and strong personnel management skills;

Strong communication skills, notably excellent English, both written and spoken, and any other language would be an asset.

Travel Required: 20%
