We have an exciting opportunity in our Global Financial Institutions Group (GFIG). The successful candidate will be a senior member of the FIG coverage team, supporting the Team Head in delivering business objectives while managing key client relationships and originating opportunities across the Financial Institutions (FI) sector in Australia and New Zealand. The role supports execution of SMBC’s FIG strategy and is accountable for revenue generation across an assigned client portfolio, leading the origination, structuring and execution of transactions, including oversight of credit processes. In addition, the role works closely with product partners to deliver integrated banking solutions and manages client account plans to drive cross-sell and wallet growth.
Reporting to the Managing Director, Head of Global FIG – Australia and Head of Sponsor Coverage – Australia; this position will be responsible for:
- Lead origination and execution of new business opportunities through proactive client engagement and market insight.
- Develop, maintain, and deepen senior relationships within banking and non-bank financial services industry community.
- Act as primary relationship manager for assigned FIG clients and support broader client coverage efforts.
- Collaborate with regional and Global FIG teams and internal product partners to support consistent client coverage and execution of cross-border opportunities.
- Provide day-to-day guidance, mentorship, and oversight to junior staff, supporting their development and contribution to team objectives.
- Support senior client engagement activities and investor relations, including maintaining counterparty credit limits.
- Take ownership for, the preparation of detailed credit-analysis of the Global Financial Institutional Group (GFIG) clients and transactions including credit applications and administrative processes related to credit.
- This role contributes to internal departments in any dealings they may have with FI customers and Sponsors to promote
- non-financial goals such as supporting the funding and liquidity of SMBC Sydney Branch, coordinating client visits for members of SMBC, etc.
- financial goals across product verticals such at Structured Products, Corporate Banking, and Global Markets (including SMBC Nikko Securities) to maximise Bank wallet capture
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- Proven track record in client relationship management and revenue generation within the FIG (or related) sector; including sound understanding of FIG sectors, market dynamics, and relevant financial products.
- High level of experience dealing with key internal stakeholders – Credit, Treasury, and other coverage / product teams.
- Experience with Debt Capital Markets and Financial Markets hedging products and services.
- Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills across front office, credit, and product teams. Good communicator, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to understand and interpret financial statements, good level of numeracy and strong financial analysis skills.
- Ability to condense complex issues into a readable format in report writing or through other communications.
- Strong time management and organisational skills.
- Tertiary qualification in Finance, Banking, or a related discipline.
