The Amazon Payments Japan (APJ) team’s mission is to delight customers by building diverse payment experiences that are trusted, valued, and easy to use—while expanding access to credit and value everywhere they shop. We accomplish this through improving and expanding the paying experience across a portfolio of solutions: Co-branded Credit Cards (CBCC), Installments, Shop with Points (SWP), Gift Cards, Payment Acceptance, and Amazon Pay.
The Director / General Manager of APJ owns all aspects of the payments business in Japan, including the P&L encompassing this portfolio. APJ operates as a standalone business within Amazon's global payments organization, making this role akin to leading a fintech company. The GM is a customer-centric payments subject matter expert and plays a pivotal role in setting the vision and shaping strategies to deliver a bar-raising paying experience for Amazon Japan customers. They also are the local payments site leader and participate in associated leadership forums.
The GM has a strong track record of influencing and collaborating effectively with internal and external partners, while balancing competing priorities to achieve long-term success. This role places a premium on someone with the ability to build and maintain long-term, trusted relationships with their teams, partners, and stakeholders, against the backdrop of challenging business decisions and a complex regulatory landscape. This senior leader should be comfortable working at both the strategic level and diving deep into details to ensure high quality execution by their teams.
The role and 130+ person team is based in Tokyo, spanning roles in Account Management, Sales, Marketing, Business Development, Product Management, Operations, Risk, UX/Design, and Science. The GM will also influence the roadmaps for 50+ dedicated engineers.
Key job responsibilities
Key responsibilities for this role include:
- Building, developing and managing the APJ team. Championing a culture that is consistent with Amazon’s Leadership Principles and raises the bar on team performance. Investing in leadership development to strengthen the team's bench of talent and their long-term growth.
- Defining the vision and growth plan for APJ thats align with Japan and global Payments priorities. Owns the comprehensive APJ P&L.
- Driving 3-year strategic and 1-year operational planning process for APJ.
- Serving as the senior local sponsor for APJ’s external partners. Building and maintaining trusted relationships with key internal senior stakeholders.
- Driving business transformation and operational excellence, including by championing an GenAI-first culture across APJ.
- Collaborating with Engineering teams to build, launch and operate the APJ business.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Proven general management experience (15+ years) building high-performance teams and driving business performance, and P&L ownership.
- Experience hiring and leading large high-performance, cross-functional teams, including Sales, Marketing, Science/Analytics, Product Management, Operations, and Business Development.
- Payments/financial services experience, including negotiating and managing partnerships, navigating regulatory requirements, and managing payments products and operations at scale.
- Experience collaborating with engineering teams to deliver products and achieve operational goals.
- Strong customer centricity and analytical skills. Comfortable using data to back up assumptions, recommendations, and drive actions.
- Experience managing a portfolio of businesses, balancing conflicting priorities, making critical trade-offs, and delivering results in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Strong verbal and written English communication skills required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal skills and experience presenting to internal and external senior leaders on complex topics.
- Ability to think big and launch industry-leading ideas; experience combining products or business assets in non-traditional ways to create new opportunities.
- Experience using advanced analytics and GenAI to transform products, services, and business operations.
- Fluency in Japanese preferred. Experience operating in Japan or other Asian countries is a plus.
