The ideal candidate combines deep technical accounting expertise in the insurance industry with strong business judgment and communication skills. This position will partner across accounting, financial reporting, investments, actuarial, reinsurance and other business areas to evaluate complex transactions, establish consistent accounting practices, and help the organization navigate evolving accounting requirements.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU:

  • Guide New-Standard Implementation: Monitor emerging U.S. GAAP guidance, assess its impact on accounting policies and the business, and partner with financial reporting, accounting, investments, actuarial, and other teams to implement new accounting standards.
  • Advise on Business Transactions: Evaluate new transactions, products, and other business activities to determine the appropriate U.S. GAAP treatment and document timely, well-supported accounting conclusions.
  • Support High-Quality Financial Reporting: Partner with financial reporting to provide technical accounting review of U.S. GAAP financial statements and assist in drafting disclosures that are accurate and consistent with U.S. GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Support Accounting Execution: Lead or support the preparation of journal entries and account reconciliations for complex accounting matters and assist with ad hoc financial reporting responsibilities during peak reporting periods.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  • U.S. GAAP Expertise: Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP and demonstrated experience applying accounting guidance to complex technical issues.
  • Research and Analytical Skills: Strong accounting research, analysis, and documentation skills, with the ability to develop clear, well-supported accounting conclusions.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex accounting matters clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • You promote a culture of diversity and inclusion, value different ideas and opinions, and listen courageously, remaining curious in all that you do.
  • This position follows a hybrid work arrangement. Employees living within 50 miles of the Omaha office are currently expected to work onsite one day per week. As we move into our new Omaha headquarters, and no later than April 2027, the onsite expectation will transition to three days per week. PREFERRED:

  • Life and health insurance industry experience.
  • 10+ years of technical accounting experience with a Big Four or regional public accounting firm, or equivalent experience with an insurance company.
  • Degree in accounting, finance or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Professional certification such as CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or equivalent.
