The Position

This position serves as Chief of Staff and strategic advisor to the North American/NNI Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer (CECO) and leads and s the Ethics & Compliance (E&C) Strategy and Operations function. This position plays a pivotal role in leading and executing strategic initiatives that enhance the effectiveness of the E&C program. As such this role is responsible for driving the development & implementation of E&C strategy and business plans across the department, and managing specific centralized operations designed to optimize efficiencies, and leveraging data and technology solutions across the department. This position also serves to document and enhance processes across the department and NAO Affiliates to ensure alignment with NN's risk profile and government assumptions. It serves as a leader and thought starter, helping to ensure that the department takes a holistic view of risk management, considering broad organizational priorities as well as external insights.

Relationships

Reports to the North American/NNI Corporate Vice President – Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer (CECO) and is a member of the E&C Leadership team. Manages a team of compliance professionals supporting the Strategy & Operations Functions including direct reports and indirect reports. Serves as member of the E&C Leadership Team as well as the NNI Leadership Team. May serve as a member of both internal and external global ethics & compliance forums and committees. Manages dedicated compliance professionals in Global Business Services (GBS), Bangalore and Mexico. Works closely with E&C colleagues across Novo Nordisk globally, NNI Legal Leadership team, and senior leaders throughout lines of business. Supports US affiliates, including Novo Nordisk production sites in Calyton, North Carolina and Novo Nordisk US-based research affiliates. External relationships include outside counsel, vendors and consultants as well as developing and maintaining relationships with the broader ethics and compliance network within the industry.

Essential Functions

  • Directly supports the CECO in facilitating and raising awareness of the Ethics and Compliance program while fostering accountability for compliance throughout the organization
  • Serves as a Chief of Staff and strategic advisor to the CECO, ensuring a proactive, holistic approach that considers broader organizational priorities and external insights
  • At the direction of the CECO, develops annual E&C strategy and measures outcomes against organizational Strategy to Action priorities
  • Represents E&C to the broader US and Global organization and as a member of the NNI Leadership Team
  • Prepares reports for presentation to the NN Board of Director and Executive Team as well as Government regulators including, potentially, the US Department of Justice and HHS regulatory bodies
  • Leads and directs the centralized operations function responsible for implementing systems, processes, tools or other operational support across all E&C functional areas (e.g., project management, TPR management, annual certifications, internal and external program reporting, patient engagement, triage and mitigation processes, assumption and process documentation
  • Leads operations function that is inclusive of direct reports and indirect reports (i.e., individuals reporting into a direct report)
  • Fosters a continuous improvement mindset and proposes enhancements to the E&C programs informed by industry trends and best practices
  • Drives strategic communications, including presentations to key internal and external stakeholders
  • Promotes a proactive approach to ethics and compliance, partnership, risk mitigation and prevention
  • Supports the CECO in promoting the Novo Nordisk Way through strategic communications that motivate and engage the organization to foster a shared commitment to ethics, integrity and trust
  • Serves as secretary to US Ethics and Compliance governance bodies (e.g. NAO/NNI Executive Ethics & Compliance Committee, and NNI Board of Director E&C Committee)
  • Provides oversight and strategic direction for department operations functions, including planning key meetings, department wide development opportunities
  • Responsible for Department budgeting and vendor contracting
  • Oversees strategic and operational support for North American affiliates
  • Works with other relevant stakeholders to support risk mitigation and process alignment/standardization across acquisitions and strategic partnerships

Physical Requirements

0-10% overnight travel required.

Development of People

Supervisory. Ensure that reporting personnel have individual development plans (IDP), with annual goals and measurements that are consistent with the priorities of the business, and that interim reviews are held so that their work is focused on those priorities, and they understand their level of accountability for results and the measurement process. Ensure that the IDP forms include completed learning and aspiration plans and are in place for all reporting personnel to enable the achievement of goals and capability to assume increased levels of responsibility. Manage the application and communication of all Novo Nordisk policies, procedures, and Novo Nordisk Way.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's or higher level degree from an accredited institution is required. Additional education/certification within the compliance and health-care related fields is strongly preferred
  • A minimum of twelve (12) years combined pharmaceutical, legal, regulatory, and compliance experience required OR ten (10)+ years’ experience if accompanied by an advanced degree or certification (e.g. MBA, JD, PMP)
  • A minimum of 3 years of people management responsibility
  • High standard of ethics and integrity
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and exceptional ability to influence at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Anti-Kickback Statute and False Claims Act, FDA rules and regulations regarding the promotion of pharmaceuticals, PhRMA code and other relevant federal and state aggregate spend reporting requirements, and the current activities and developments involving pharmaceutical sales and marketing required
  • Demonstrated knowledge and clear understanding of the required elements of effective ethics and compliance programs as outlined in the HHS OIG Compliance Program Guidance and the US Federal Sentencing Guidelines
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective strategic relationships and networks with internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead change in a large, matrix organization
  • Effective time management skills
  • Communicates effectively with different audiences and in different contexts
  • Ability to drive multiple projects to completion meeting internal and external deliverables with high degree of accuracy
  • Prior experience managing professionals required
  • Ability to think objectively and use sound reasoning principles
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and ability to influence at all levels of the organization

The base compensation range for this position is $187,100 to $327,500. Base compensation is determined based on a number of factors. This position is also eligible for a company bonus based on individual and company performance.

Novo Nordisk offers long-term incentive compensation and or company vehicles depending on the position's level or other company factors.
