Job Description

Director - Digital Healthcare

The role will be working in the UK Digital Healthcare practice within our Technology and Data service line in Advisory, supporting clients across Infrastructure, Government and Health. Our clients are making major investments in digital platforms, data, automation and electronic patient record capabilities, but the value is only realised when technology is adopted, embedded into clinical and operational workflows, and connected to measurable outcomes. This Director role is designed for a leader who can originate, sell and deliver large national and local mandates where technology deployment, adoption, change and benefits realisation are treated as one integrated transformation challenge.

The team

KPMG is a major advisor to the UK healthcare market, supporting national bodies, systems, providers and local organisations to deliver complex transformation. This role will sit within a growing Cyber and Digital Healthcare business and work closely with cyber, data, AI, cloud, technology transformation, operational improvement, clinical transformation, change and managed services teams. The successful candidate will help scale our market-facing capability in digital adoption and technology-enabled outcomes, with particular focus on EPR, AVT and other digitally enabled health and care workflows.

The role

This is a Director role to lead our go-to-market and delivery approach for Digital Healthcare, with a focus on large national mandates and local health and care mandates that deploy technology as part of a broader ambition to improve productivity, operational performance, staff experience, patient experience and outcomes. The role is not simply about implementing systems. It is about helping healthcare organisations get the best out of technology by shaping the operating model, redesigning pathways, preparing users, embedding adoption, and sustaining new ways of working after go-live.

The successful candidate will be credible with senior healthcare leaders, digital leaders, operational leaders and clinical stakeholders, and will be able to move comfortably between strategy, delivery, adoption and benefits realisation. They will understand the practical realities of implementing EPR, AVT and wider digital health technologies in complex healthcare environments, and will know how to turn deployed technology into changed behaviours, improved workflows and measurable outcomes.

Core distinction: this role is not a pure technology deployment role. It requires deep experience of adoption, change, workflow redesign, benefits delivery and embedding technology into everyday clinical, operational and corporate ways of working.

The Director role will be responsible for the following areas:

  • Work collaboratively with the leadership of the Digital Healthcare business, Technology and Data service line, IGH colleagues, capability leads and alliance partners to deliver the digital health business plan for national and local healthcare clients.
  • Originate, shape and lead major digital healthcare opportunities focused on technology-enabled transformation, including EPR, AVT, digital front door, workflow automation, analytics, interoperability, service redesign and digitally enabled productivity.
  • Lead the end-to-end delivery of complex digital healthcare transformation programmes, ensuring that technology deployment is connected to adoption, change, clinical and operational workflow redesign, benefits realisation and sustainable outcomes.
  • Build and manage relationships with NHS England, national health bodies, provider organisations, local health and care organisations, private healthcare organisations, digital leaders, clinical leaders and operational executives.
  • Develop propositions that combine technology transformation, digital adoption, clinical and operational change, data, AI, cyber, cloud, privacy, service design and managed services into practical offerings for healthcare clients.
  • Work with clients to define the case for change, target outcomes, adoption strategy, delivery roadmap, operating model, benefits framework and governance needed to realise value from technology investments.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams across business change, clinical transformation, service design, product delivery, technology implementation, data, cyber, cloud and operational improvement.
  • Actively contribute to relationships with technology partners and vendors, from major EPR and enterprise platforms to specialist AVT, workflow, analytics and automation providers, while maintaining KPMG’s independent advisory position.
  • Build the people capability required to scale the practice, including recruiting and developing specialists in digital health, adoption, change, technology implementation, benefits delivery and healthcare transformation.
  • Contribute to practice management, including proposition development, thought leadership, knowledge management, reusable delivery assets, training and market eminence.

Reporting to the Lead Digital Healthcare Partner, the Director role involves:

  • Taking accountability for the delivery of digital healthcare engagements and leading multiple programmes or workstreams on a day-to-day basis with the support of Senior Managers, Managers and specialist teams.
  • Being responsible for expanding KPMG’s Digital Healthcare services across national and local mandates, with a clear focus on technology-enabled outcomes rather than technology deployment alone.
  • Acting as a trusted adviser to clients on the pursuit, design and delivery of digital healthcare programmes, including those using EPR, AVT, AI, data and cloud-enabled technologies.
  • Leading business development, bid strategy, proposal development, client presentations and commercial negotiation for major Digital Healthcare pursuits.
  • Building and managing excellent networks and client relationships, typically at CEO, COO, CIO, CCIO, CNIO, CDO, CTO, Director of Digital, Director of Transformation, Chief Clinical Information Officer, Chief Nursing Information Officer, Medical Director and board level.
  • Providing leadership across delivery teams to ensure strong programme governance, risk management, commercial control, quality, stakeholder alignment and outcome delivery.
  • Coaching and developing team members, with a focus on building digitally confident, healthcare-literate and commercially sharp talent able to deliver national and local healthcare mandates.
  • Working across KPMG to integrate the strongest capabilities from digital, technology, cyber, data, AI, cloud, operational transformation, change and managed services.
  • Travelling across the UK to regional offices and client sites, and internationally where required to support client delivery or alliance development.
  • Acting in line with KPMG’s values at all times.

The person

  • Bachelor’s degree qualification. MBA, Master’s degree or relevant professional qualification desirable.
  • Significant experience working in digital healthcare, either in consulting, professional services, a technology provider, a system integrator, an NHS or healthcare organisation, or an allied public sector environment.
  • Proven track record of selling and delivering complex digital health programmes, ideally including EPR, AVT, workflow automation, digital adoption, clinical transformation, operational productivity or technology-enabled service redesign.
  • Deep understanding of the UK healthcare landscape, including NHS national bodies, provider organisations, local health and care systems, digital policy, operational pressures and the realities of clinical and operational change.
  • Experience delivering major technology-enabled transformation across the full lifecycle, from strategy, business case and roadmap through mobilisation, design, build, deployment, adoption, optimisation and benefits realisation.
  • Specific experience of embedding technology into ways of working, including change impact assessment, stakeholder engagement, training strategy, floorwalking or hypercare, adoption measurement, benefits tracking, workflow redesign and post go-live optimisation.
  • Ability to connect technology delivery to measurable outcomes, including productivity, staff time released, clinical safety, patient experience, operational flow, data quality, digital maturity, risk reduction and financial benefits.
  • Experience of working with senior healthcare stakeholders, including board-level leaders, clinicians, operational teams, digital and technology teams, information governance, finance, workforce and transformation teams.
  • Strong understanding of Government Digital Service principles, NHS service standards, digital health assurance expectations, clinical safety, accessibility, information governance, data protection and technology delivery disciplines relevant to healthcare.
  • Experience developing or contributing to business and investment cases for healthcare or public sector technology programmes, including benefits logic, value case, affordability, deliverability and risk.
  • Credibility with technology vendors and alliance partners, with the ability to shape joint propositions while protecting KPMG’s independence and client-first advisory position.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams using agile, waterfall or hybrid delivery methods, with the judgement to apply the right delivery approach for complex healthcare environments.
  • Commercially aware, with the relationships, market insight and delivery credibility required to build a significant revenue portfolio and convert market demand into profitable work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technology, adoption and change issues to non-technical audiences.
  • A strong coaching mindset and the ability to build a market-facing team with digital healthcare domain expertise, delivery discipline and outcome-led consulting skills.

Priority experience areas

Technology Expertise

EPR, AVT, workflow automation, digital front door, integration, data, AI, cloud and digitally enabled operating models.

Adoption and Change Expertise

What success looks like

  • KPMG is recognised by clients as a leader in outcome-led digital healthcare transformation, not simply as a technology implementation adviser.
  • Major national and local mandates are converted into high-quality delivery programmes with clear adoption plans, measurable benefits and sustained behaviour change.
  • Clients can demonstrate that deployed technologies are being used effectively, embedded into workflows and contributing to productivity, safety, experience and operational outcomes.
  • The Digital Healthcare practice has a stronger pipeline, stronger delivery bench, clearer propositions and deeper relationships across the healthcare market.
