Job Description

The Role:

The Director Clinical Education RN is a professional Registered Nurse who assumes primary responsibility for directing and coordinating clinical educational and practice related activities for the West Portland Service Area. This includes Providence St. Vincent, Providence Newberg, Providence Seaside, and the regional nursing orientation team. Works collaboratively with system, divisional, and ministry operational leaders, interdisciplinary stakeholders, and clinical education caregivers to support system, divisional and service area strategic initiatives and goals.

Supports clinical education efforts that encompass both nursing and non-nursing clinical groups to address system, divisional, service area, and ministry priorities. Serves as the departmental liaison to system and divisional leaders, to Service Area Nursing and other Core Leaders, represents the department by providing expert consultation to other departments as appropriate, and responds on behalf of the department to requests for new and revised education and practice needs.

Supports implementation of divisional and system-level initiatives by serving on select committees and work groups, and by supervising/assisting employees charged with implementation of system-wide initiatives. Manages departmental budgets and monitors departmental activities and productivity. Collaborates with system, divisional, and ministry leaders in developing strategy and implementing tactical plans for achieving and maintaining Pathway or Magnet recognition, and supporting local ministry PTAP, Pathway/Magnet process as the onsite resource for the ANCC recognition program. Directs and coordinates departmental activities in accordance with federal, state, and local standards and within Providence and Service Area policies and guidelines.

What You'll Do:

  • Assumes responsibility for all caregiver clinical educational activities for all the ministries in service area. This role plays a critical role in partnering with the system, divisional, and ministry leadership teams and education teams.
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates programs for caregivers across the service area.
  • Coordinates the hospital wide competency validation process and documentation. Provides and approves learning materials to clinical departments related to re-validation due dates and competency-based orientation. Complies with regulatory agency mandates that require employees to render care to patients and families appropriate to their age, cultural background, spiritual and psychosocial needs.
  • Works collaboratively with system and divisional Education & Practice Directors across the system to ensure alignment with all system and divisional programs and timelines.
  • Directs the work of the clinical education staff across the service area to ensure the support and progress of all clinical departments as well as tracking required education.
  • Collaborates with system and divisional leadership and directs the oversight of all clinical onboarding and orientation, including Residency, Fellowships, and TIPS (Transition into Practice) program management in the service area and ensures it aligns with system and divisional initiatives and implementation plans.
  • Serves on system, divisional, and service area shared governance councils/teams, and serves as a leader on any education related councils and committees to coordinate, track and support all clinical education activities.
  • Serves as an expert and educational resource to the nursing community.
  • Collaborates with service area department managers to educate staff on all mandatory education as well as education on new equipment and technology.
  • Uses performance improvement process for all performance improvement related activities.
  • Conducts departmental human resource management functions. These include participating in the hiring and firing process as well as conducting coaching and performance appraisals in a timely manner. Ensures every effort is made to motivate and inspire excellence in employees.

What You’ll Bring:

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Master's Degree (Masters can be in Nursing or a related field (Health Administration, Business, Business Administration, Public Health, Management, etc.)
  • Ph.D. (preferred)
  • Required upon hire: Oregon Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed)

Experience & Expertise

  • 7 years of clinical nursing practice.
  • 7 years of progressively responsible nursing leadership roles.
  • 7 years of experience in working with teams.
  • 7 years of experience in Program development and evaluation.
  • 7 years of experience working in collaborative relationships with medicine and other health professions.
  • 3 years of research experience (preferred).
  • 3 years of experience teaching adults in a healthcare setting (preferred).

  • Demonstrates enterprising skills to frequently initiate and implement educational projects across the region.
  • Evidence of leadership, critical problem-solving skills, education, prioritization, presentation, and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of overall hospital clinical and non-clinical systems and processes as well as information systems, business analytics, financial and organizational development, training, and education.

The full pay range is listed in accordance with applicable law. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, organizational compensation alignment, and the approved hiring department budget for the position. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation and benefits.

Posted are the minimum and the maximum wage rates on the wage range for this position. The successful candidate's placement on the wage range for this position will be determined based upon relevant job experience and other applicable factors. These amounts are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
