The Department of Hospitals & Surgical Health Services establishes the Government of Alberta’s strategic direction for health, including advising government on health policy, legislation and standards, and public health concerns; monitoring and reporting health system performance; setting policies and priorities for the electronic/digital health environment; and providing oversight and ensuring accountability across the health system.

This position resides in the Ministry of Hospitals & Surgical Health Services under the Strategic Services and Procurement Division, Strategic Policy and Initiatives Branch.

Role Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead ministry-wide policy, legislative, and governance initiatives aligned with government priorities.
  • Provide strategic advice to executive leadership on policy development, legislative planning, governance, and Cabinet decision-making processes.
  • Oversee the coordination and delivery of Cabinet submissions, briefing materials, legislative proposals, and strategic initiatives.
  • Monitor ministry priorities, emerging issues, risks, and projects, ensuring timely reporting and effective implementation.
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with ministries, central agencies, stakeholders, and public bodies to advance organizational objectives.
  • Direct agency governance, board appointments, accountability frameworks, and compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Provide leadership, operational oversight, and workforce development to support a high-performing and collaborative team.
  • Manage branch resources, budgets, strategic planning, and continuous improvement activities to achieve ministry goals.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A university graduation in a field related to the position assignment, (Public Administration) supplemented by seven (7) years progressively responsible experience. Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

Preference may be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:

  • A Master’s degree in Public Administration.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent project management training.
  • Change management certification or training (e.g., Prosci or equivalent).
  • Leadership and executive development training.

  • Final candidates will be required to undergo a criminal records check (CRC).
  • Shift Work: Monday through Friday from 8:15AM to 4:30PM
