About WMTV:
WMTV serves south central Wisconsin. We are the #1 station—leading the market in news and weather coverage, and we are recognized for sharing information with accuracy and immediacy on our digital platforms.
Description:
WMTV 15 News is southern Wisconsin's home for breaking news, First Alert Weather, and community storytelling. We're expanding our digital presence and investing in the future of local journalism, and that future is video-first, platform-native, and audience-obsessed. We have a dedicated digital team in place, a clear content strategy, and the infrastructure to support this role from day one.
This is not a traditional MMJ job with a social media requirement tacked on at the end.
This is a digital-first content creator role. You will produce original video content for our social media platforms and website first, and that content will then be adapted for our newscasts. Broadcast is the secondary destination, not the starting point.
You won't be figuring this out alone. WMTV has a dedicated digital team, a dayside digital content manager, a nightside digital content producer, and a part-time digital content producer, with an established workflow, content strategy, and mentorship structure already in place. You'll plug into a system that works, and help make it even stronger.
Madison's audience is young, educated, and digitally engaged. The University of Wisconsin community alone represents a massive, underserved digital news audience. The opportunity to build something meaningful here is real.
If you think in Reels before rundowns — if you instinctively know what makes someone stop scrolling — we want to talk.
Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
What You'll Do:
- Conceive, shoot, edit, and publish original short-form video content for Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and our website
- Lead with social and digital storytelling — then adapt content for broadcast use
- Produce 3–5 social-first video pieces per week that are platform-native and audience-driven
- Identify stories that the Wisconsin audience needs to know and adapt them for digital
- Collaborate daily with WMTV's digital content team (dayside and nightside digital producers) within an established workflow
- Write digital headlines, captions, and copy optimized for web and social engagement
- Cover breaking news and community stories with a digital-first lens
- Understand and apply basic SEO principles to digital content
- Track performance metrics and use data to inform future content decisions
- Contribute to broadcast newscasts— but always build for digital first
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Genuine platform fluency — you understand what performs on Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Facebook Video, and you can explain why
- Self-shooting and editing skills — comfortable on both mobile and traditional camera gear
- Speed and efficiency — you can ideate, shoot, edit, and publish in hours, not days
- Audience instincts — you think about the viewer/scroller before you think about the anchor toss
- Ability to adapt digital content for broadcast when needed
- Comfort working within an established editorial team structure and content approval workflow
- A collaborative spirit — you'll be working alongside a dedicated digital team, not in isolation
- Valid driver's license and ability to drive a company vehicle
- A journalism-related degree is preferred, but not required — show us your content, and we'll know
- Must be able to carry 35+ pounds of gear, and be experienced in shooting and editing unique content.
- Familiarity with ENPS, Arc, Edius, Syncbak and Chartbeat is a plus, but not required
