Summary

Digital and Social Media Specialist

Under general supervision, the Digital and Social Media Specialist supports the development and execution of digital storytelling across the City of Detroit’s social media platforms. This position requires a strong understanding of social media, excellent writing skills and the ability to translate municipal programs, policies, services and public information into clear, engaging and accessible content for Detroit residents.

The ideal candidate is collaborative, creative and highly aware of local and national news, emerging conversations and digital trends that may affect the City of Detroit and its residents. This individual should understand the role of municipal government and have a genuine interest in using digital platforms to tell compelling stories about City services, neighborhoods, people, programs and progress.

Examples of duties

  1. Write, edit and curate engaging captions, posts and digital copy that reflect the City of Detroit’s voice, communication priorities and brand standards.
  2. Collaborate closely with City departments and other internal partners to identify stories, coordinate content and support citywide campaigns and announcements.
  3. Monitor local and national news, public policy developments, community conversations and emerging digital trends to identify relevant content opportunities and potential issues.
  4. Translate complex municipal programs, policies, services and public information into clear, timely and accessible digital content for Detroit residents.
  5. Attend press conferences, community events, City programs and other public activities to capture and publish real time social media coverage.
  6. Produce and coordinate original digital content, including written posts, graphics, photos, short form videos and other multimedia storytelling assets.
  7. Monitor the City’s social media accounts for resident questions, concerns and feedback. Respond when appropriate and route inquiries to the appropriate department for follow up.
  8. Maintain a working knowledge of the City’s departments, services, leadership priorities and major initiatives to ensure content is accurate and relevant.
  9. Support the planning and execution of social media calendars, digital campaigns and content series in alignment with the City’s broader communications strategy.
  10. Monitor social media and digital performance, identify audience trends and prepare reports that help strengthen future content and engagement strategies.
  11. Exercise sound judgment, accuracy and professionalism when publishing information on behalf of the City of Detroit.
  12. Communicate emerging issues, community concerns and online conversations to the appropriate members of the Media Services and Communications teams.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required. Additional courses in Communications, Writing, or a related field preferred.

Two (2) years of experience in social media content management, website management, multimedia, or a related field.

Preferred:

Additional education or professional training in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, digital media, writing or a related field is preferred.

A minimum of two years of professional experience in social media management, digital content creation, multimedia production or a related field is required.

Candidates should also demonstrate:

  • Experience writing and curating social media captions and digital content for multiple platforms.
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading and storytelling skills.
  • Knowledge of local and national news, current events and issues affecting Detroit residents.
  • A working knowledge of municipal government, public policy or public sector communications, or the ability and desire to develop that knowledge quickly.
  • Experience collaborating with creative, communications, media relations and cross functional teams.
  • The ability to translate complex information into clear and engaging public facing content.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple assignments in a fast paced environment.
  • Sound judgment when handling sensitive, timely or high visibility information.
