Examples of duties

This position focuses on maintaining and repairing the wide range of vehicles and equipment needed for daily transportation operations. The work supports safe travel and reliable service throughout the county. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Vehicle Repairs: Repair vehicles and equipment including trucks, tractors, sweepers, mixers, and loaders
  • System Maintenance: Adjust and repair cooling, suspension, electrical, heating, and air-conditioning systems
  • State Inspections: Perform official inspections, complete records, and road test vehicles for compliance
  • Diagnostic Work: Identify mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and determine repair methods
  • Equipment Care: Maintain a clean work area, follow safety procedures, and report injuries or equipment damage

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $56,607 (before taxes).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
  • This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) on the first day of employment.
