Diagnostic Medical Sonographers use imaging devices that emit sound waves to create the image that will help physicians assess and diagnose various conditions. There aredifferent kindsof imaging devices, includingultrasounds,sonogramsand echocardiograms.Generally,sonographicimaging devices use a handheld probe, which is moved over the area being surveyed to create a two-dimensional or three-dimensional image. These devices can be used for therapy, diagnosis, and even to guide interventional procedures like biopsies or draining fluid collections.In this role, you will perform imaging on both adults and pediatrics patients, allowing you to advance your skillsthrough working with a diverse patient population. There is plenty of room for growth in this role, with team members promoting career development.

A caregiver in this position worksMonday-Friday from7:00AM – 3:30PM, including two holidays per year

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Perform diagnostic sonographic imaging through the application of non-ionizing, high-frequency sound waves for patients of all ages.

  • Perform ultrasound studies (i.e.obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric and vascular).

  • Consult with referring physiciansregardingpatients' medical history and selection ofappropriate proceduresand equipmentrequiredfor proper diagnosis.

  • Review charts,previousreportsand requisition prior to the exam.

  • Educate patientsregardingprocedures,equipmentand exams to ensure understanding and cooperation.

  • Ensure patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam.

  • Assistwith scheduling of patients and schedule all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures.

  • Monitor all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations.

  • Perform preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided anddeterminepriority of patients based on the daily schedules.

  • Acquire, archive,transmitand print images via PACS.

  • Completeafter-hourstransmission of images andappropriate paperwork

  • Immediately report any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator.

  • Process billing via RIS.

  • Ensure proper function of ultrasound equipment and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions.

  • Adequately supply exam rooms with linen and related medical supplies.

  • Assistwith clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents and in-service education of caregivers.

  • Assistwith orienting new caregivers to the equipment, departmentproceduresand scanning protocols.

  • Demonstrate ultrasound equipment for caregivers and visitors.

  • Potentially rotate through all diagnostic imaging modalities,sitesand/or locations.

  • Assistin new investigative techniques,proceduresand equipment.

  • Maintain the most up to date knowledge in the field through self-motivated education and attendance ofappropriate conferencesand symposiums.

  • MaintainRDMSand in good standing.

  • If working within the Imaging Instituteperform non-invasive vascular studies to include veins, arteries, pulse volumereadingsandassistthe physician during invasive studies.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Graduate of an accredited school in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and in good standing

  • Two years of recent modality experience

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross

  • Pediatric Sonography specialized certification

  • OBGYN/Women’s Health Institute:Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) within one year of hire

  • Certification within OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) must be obtained within one year of hire

  • Completed specialized training in Maternal Fetal Medicine

  • Imaging Institute:Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) RT(S) or RT(VS) upon hire

  • One certification within Abdominal (RDMS, AB), OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) or Vascular (RVT, VT) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) upon hire. The other two certifications must be obtained within18 monthsof hire

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • One year of experience in pediatric ultrasound


Physical Requirements:

  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.

  • •Must be able to lift or assist with lifting patients of varying weight and manipulate equipment daily.


Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
