Diagnostic Medical Physicists
Adult Radiology Admin/Support
General Description:
Diagnostic medical physicists or sometimes referred to as medical physicists, diagnostic physicists or simply as physicists at OU Health are qualified experts in medical physics as defined by the American College of Radiology, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, and other related professional organizations. The medical physicists provide essential administrative, organizational, structural and technical expertise that keeps the hospitals and clinic functioning smoothly, safety, and at a state-of-the-art technical and clinical levels in a technically complex environment. At OU Health their main area of expertise is in nuclear medicine and diagnostic imaging including X-ray, CT, MRI, mammography and ultrasound.
Essential Responsibilities:

Develop or help to develop or review policies and procedures in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine.
Develop or help to develop or quality control procedures. Direct quality control program when needed.
Perform or oversee the performance of quality procedures that are beyond the qualifications of a Quality Control Technologist and are typically performed by medical physicists or designated assistants.
Provide recommendations and technical information regarding new equipment selection, layout and installation.
Conduct acceptance testing when there is an installation, major repair, or upgrade of equipment for imaging or assay of radiopharmceuticals.
Work with maintenance personnel or vendors to ensure appropriate repair, calibration, and preventative maintenance of equipment for imaging or assay of radiopharmceuticals when necessary.
Help to troubleshoot problems in equipment for imaging or assay of radiopharmceuticals when necessary.
Assist in the initial implementation of new high technology equipment or new clinical procedures.
Ensure radiation safety and regulatory requirements are met during routine operations.
Physicist are involved in the investigation of excessive radiation exposure to patients, technologists or physicians.
Provide information on radiation dose or exposure to patients. Determine patient radiation dosimetry when needed, and to investigate cases or procedures of significant or excessive radiation dose.
Help with preparation and be available for external or internal inspections that include review of quality control programs and radiation safety.
Medical physicists provide radiation safety specific to areas or procedures in hospitals/clinics. New facilities or when room use is changed or when equipment is moved require adequate shielding followed by verification of the shielding installation that is performed and accepted by licensed medical physicists.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: PhD in Diagnostic Medical Physics and successful completion of an Imaging Physics residency program.
Experience: 0 - 3 years' experience in a Diagnostic Medical Physics, Nuclear Medicine Medical Physics, or Radiation Therapy Medical Physics position.
License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Board Certified or board eligible by the American College of Radiology (ABR).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Proficient with the use of Microsoft Office tools.
Demonstrated ability to work well with team members and independently.
