Job Description

The purpose of this position is:

To improve reliability and availability of equipment in the Dewatering Plant (DWP) through systematic analysis of equipment failures, deep root cause identification, and development of effective maintenance and operational strategies. This role acts as a technical authority in equipment condition and failure analysis, ensuring that recurring failures are identified, eliminated, and prevented through structured engineering approaches. The Engineer will bridge the gap between data analysis, engineering insight, and field execution, enabling sustainable improvement in equipment performance.

The key duties and responsibilities of this position are:

1. Equipment Failure Analysis & Reliability Improvement

  • Analyze equipment failures (breakdown and recurring issues) across DWP systems.
  • Conduct deep root cause analysis (RCA) using structured methods (e.g., RCA, FMEA, 5-Why, Fault Tree Analysis).
  • Identify failure patterns, bad actors, and chronic equipment issues.
  • Develop and recommend corrective and preventive actions to eliminate root causes.
  • Drive equipment reliability improvement initiatives (MTBF increase, downtime reduction).

2. Condition Monitoring & Data Analysis

  • Review equipment condition data (vibration, temperature, pressure, performance trends).
  • Establish baseline performance and identify early signs of degradation.
  • Develop predictive / condition-based monitoring strategies for critical equipment.
  • Collaborate with maintenance teams to ensure proper data collection and interpretation.

3. System & Process Optimization

  • Evaluate existing maintenance strategies (preventive, corrective, predictive).
  • Recommend more effective and efficient maintenance systems.
  • Develop standard work practices and troubleshooting guidelines.
  • Improve asset lifecycle management and maintenance planning approaches.

4. Technical Support & Field Engagement

  • Act as subject matter expert for complex equipment issues.
  • Provide technical guidance to maintenance and operation teams during troubleshooting.
  • Ensure recommendations are practical and executable at field level.
  • Conduct site inspections and participate in failure investigations.

5. Cross-functional Coordination

  • Coordinate with Operations, Maintenance, Planning, and Engineering teams.
  • Communicate analysis results and recommendations clearly to field executors.
  • Ensure alignment between engineering solutions and operational realities.
  • Support knowledge transfer and capability development of team members.

6. Continuous Improvement & Knowledge Management

  • Develop failure databases and lessons learned repository.
  • Standardize RCA methodologies and reporting formats.
  • Identify opportunities for design improvement, modification, or upgrade.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and reliability programs. HSSE & Engineering Compliance
  • Ensure electrical engineering activities comply with HSSE requirements and safe engineering practices.
  • Review electrical designs and modifications for inherent safety and risk reduction.
  • Support compliance audits and engineering assurance activities.

7. Vendor & Technology Evaluation

  • Provide technical evaluation of electrical equipment vendors and solutions.
  • Review vendor technical proposals and recommend technically suitable options.
  • Support technical engagement with OEMs and engineering consultants as required.

8. Safety & Risk Management

  • Ensure all failure analysis includes safety impact assessment, especially for high-risk equipment.
  • Identify potential equipment-related hazards (e.g., overpressure, leakage, mechanical failure, rotating equipment hazards).
  • Integrate risk-based thinking into maintenance and reliability strategies (e.g., criticality ranking, risk-based maintenance).
  • Support investigation of high-potential incidents (HIPO) related to equipment failure.
  • Recommend engineering controls to eliminate or reduce safety risks (design improvement, interlock, protection system).
  • Ensure all recommendations comply with HSSE standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with HSSE team to incorporate lessons learned from incidents into reliability improvement plans.
  • Promote a culture of safe, reliable, and sustainable equipment operation.

The background, education, and work experience needed to succeed in this job are:

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree (S1) in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in:
    • Equipment reliability / maintenance engineering / condition monitoring
    • Heavy industry, mining, mineral processing, oil & gas
  • Strong exposure to rotating equipment and processing plant systems.

Core Competencies (Knowledge, Skills & Characters)
