At the Pirates, we believe in the power of a diverse workforce and strive to create an inclusive culture centered in Passion, Innovation, Respect, Accountability, Teamwork, Empathy, and Service.

We are seeking a talented and motivated DevOps Engineer to join our Baseball Systems team. In this role, you will play a critical part in modernizing, automating, and supporting the infrastructure that powers our baseball operations and enterprise systems. The reliable, secure, and scalable solutions you build will enable our analysts, data scientists, engineers, and front office staff to work efficiently and confidently from the clubhouse to the cloud. You will work to ensure our systems are always available, performant, and ready to support the demands of a Major League Baseball organization like powering trade and draft decisions and supporting how coaches and players interact.

Responsibilities:

  1. Support on-premise and legacy infrastructure, migrating systems to cloud-based platforms where appropriate.
  2. Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines to streamline software delivery across engineering teams.
  3. Manage and monitor cloud infrastructure across various platforms, ensuring high availability and cost efficiency.
  4. Implement and maintain infrastructure as code using tools such as Terraform, Pulumi, or CloudFormation.
  5. Containerize and orchestrate applications using Docker and Kubernetes to support scalable, production-grade deployments.
  6. Collaborate with data engineers and software developers to support infrastructure needs for data pipelines, APIs, and analytical platforms.
  7. Establish and maintain robust monitoring, alerting, and incident response processes to minimize downtime and ensure system reliability.
  8. Enforce security best practices across infrastructure, including access control, secrets management, and vulnerability patching.
  9. Support disaster recovery planning and backup strategies for critical systems.
  10. Collect requirements from non-technical stakeholders and translate those into scalable infrastructure solutions.
  11. Document infrastructure patterns and runbooks so the entire team can operate and maintain systems confidently.

Qualifications:

Required:

  1. We know not every great candidate will meet all of these requirements. If you're excited about the role and feel like you'd be a strong fit, we encourage you to apply.
  2. Demonstrated experience with CI/CD tooling (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, CircleCI).
  3. Demonstrated proficiency with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including compute, networking, storage, and IAM.
  4. Demonstrated experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
  5. Demonstrated experience with infrastructure as code tools (e.g., Terraform, Pulumi, or CloudFormation).
  6. Demonstrated familiarity with scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation tasks.
  7. Demonstrated problem-solving skills and strong attention to detail.
  8. Experience supporting data engineering or analytics infrastructure (e.g., Snowflake, Databricks, Airflow).
  9. Familiarity with secrets management tools such as HashiCorp Vault or AWS Secrets Manager.
  10. Experience with observability platforms such as Datadog, Grafana, or Prometheus.
  11. Authorized to work lawfully in the United States.
  12. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

Desired:

  1. Experience supporting ML/AI pipelines with large data inputs.
  2. Demonstrated passion for baseball or other sports.
  3. Deep curiosity about how technology and infrastructure enable better baseball decisions.
