Job Description

Legal & General (L&G) is a leading UK financial services group and major global investor.

We’ve been safeguarding people’s financial futures since 1836, and strive to build a better society, while improving the lives of our customers and creating value for shareholders.

We are one of the world’s largest asset managers and provide powerful asset origination capabilities. Together, these underpin our retirement and protection solutions: we are an international player in pension risk transfer, in UK and US life insurance, and in UK workplace pensions and retirement income.

As part of the wider L&G Group, our heritage goes back over 180 years, with a solid reputation as one of the leading financial services groups. We are pioneering institutional investment into the housing sector, whilst providing excellent service and quality homes.

Focusing primarily on the Shared Ownership and affordable rent markets, we strive to be the UK’s leading private affordable housing provider, known for excellent service and quality homes.

At L&G Affordable Homes, we're committed to increasing the supply of high-quality, sustainable affordable housing across the UK. As a Development Manager, you'll play a key role in identifying, acquiring and progressing development opportunities from initial appraisal through to approval and handover for delivery. Working closely with colleagues, developers, consultants and funding partners, you'll help bring forward schemes that create lasting social impact while meeting commercial, regulatory and quality objectives.

If you're commercially minded, collaborative and passionate about delivering much-needed homes, we'd love to hear from you.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Identifying and assessing residential development opportunities, including S106, package deal and land-led schemes
  • Building and maintaining a pipeline of opportunities through market engagement and stakeholder relationship management
  • Preparing and managing financial appraisals, viability assessments and sensitivity modelling to support investment decisions
  • Negotiating and coordinating development agreements, contracts, Heads of Terms and acquisition documentation
  • Managing due diligence activities and supporting planning, design and pre-construction processes
  • Collaborating with developers, consultants, funding bodies and internal teams to progress schemes efficiently
  • Producing governance papers, approval submissions and progress reports while maintaining accurate project data
  • Supporting the successful handover of approved schemes into delivery while promoting quality, sustainability and compliance standards

Who we’re looking for:

  • Experience within residential development, affordable housing, real estate, construction or a related sector
  • A track record of progressing housing-led schemes and supporting successful commercial negotiations
  • Strong financial appraisal, analytical and commercial assessment skills
  • Knowledge of the UK planning system, development lifecycle and affordable housing environment
  • Experience managing consultants, stakeholders and multiple project workstreams simultaneously
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build trusted working relationships across a range of stakeholders
  • A proactive, organised and solutions-focused approach with strong attention to detail
  • A degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience, with professional accreditation (or a desire to work towards it) considered advantageous

Whatever your role, we reward performance and behaviour with a package that looks after all the things that are important to you. Here are some of the benefits we offer:

  • The opportunity to participate in our annual, performance -related bonus plan and valuable share schemes
  • Generous pension contribution
  • Life assurance
  • Healthcare Plan (permanent employees only)
  • At least 25 days holiday, plus public holidays. There’s also the option to buy and sell holiday
  • Competitive family leave
  • Participate in our electric car scheme, which offers employees the option to hire a brand-new electric car through tax efficient salary sacrifice (permanent employees only)
  • There are many discounts we offer – both for our own products and at a range of high street stores and online
  • We’re creating net‑zero carbon workplaces by 2030 by investing in our sustainable, modern offices across the UK, all designed to bring people together and elevate the in‑person experience

Qualifications

Additional Information

At L&G, we believe it's possible to generate positive returns today while helping to build a better future for all.

If you join us, you’ll be part of a welcoming, inclusive culture, with opportunities to collaborate with people of diverse backgrounds, views, and experiences. Guided by leaders with integrity who care about your future and wellbeing. Empowered through initiatives which support people to develop their careers and excel.

We care passionately about outcomes rather than attendance and are therefore open to discussing all kinds of flexible working options including part-time, term-time and job shares. Although some roles have limited flexibility due to customer demand, we accommodate requests when we can.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t meet every single criterion in this advert. Instead, think about what you excel at and what else you can bring in terms of strengths, potential and connection to our purpose.

About Legal & General

Legal & General is a leading UK financial services group and major global investor.

Our three divisions enable us to carefully invest capital over the long term in a responsible way that delivers returns to shareholders while doing good. Along with growing our pension risk transfer business, our strategy focuses on asset management as the cornerstone of our business, including by opening up private markets to more of our clients. Meanwhile, our retail business is focused on building lifelong relationships with customers as they save for retirement and protect themselves and their families.

What unites all three parts of our business is summed up in our purpose statement which sets out what we do, why we do it, and our belief in the power of capital. It builds on what’s inspired us since our beginnings in 1836, and challenges us to do more, with greater urgency, in more places, for more people and in more ways, for the long term.
