As a Designer Lead, you will guide a team of design personnel to support operations, maintenance, and capital projects of various sizes. Your primary focus will be to mentor and support others while reporting progress to your formal leader, project teams, and other departments as required. A successful candidate will be proficient with current CAD software and have the ability to demonstrate project planning, resource allocation, teamwork and evaluation skills.

Day in the Life:

A Designer Lead / Electrical Designer at Williams starts the day by reviewing project priorities, coordinating with engineers and project teams, and assigning work to design personnel. Throughout the day, they guide and mentor team members, monitor progress, and communicate status updates to stakeholders.

The role involves creating and reviewing a wide range of electrical design deliverables, including one-line diagrams, grounding plans, electrical plans, MCC schematics, conduit and cable schedules, and equipment connection drawings for mission-critical data centers They ensure all drawings meet applicable codes, company standards, and project requirements while supporting projects from concept through construction and as-built completion

A successful day includes balancing technical design work with leadership responsibilities—solving problems, improving work processes, supporting design reviews, and ensuring accurate, high-quality deliverables are issued on time.

Responsibilities/Expectations:

  • Guides a team of design personnel to efficiently meet overall project objectives and reviews the work of others to ensure standards of quality are met
  • Recommends work methods, techniques, and procedures and takes part in work scheduling, setting priorities, and completion dates. Provides metrics for recurring reports
  • Monitors and tracks progress of design projects and communicates status to partners
  • Assists Design Leaders, Supervisors, Project Managers and Engineers with scope, schedule and budget definition for new projects requiring design and drafting activities
  • Acts as a primary contact between internal and external business partners to establish upfront expectations, assignment criteria, progress reporting, and general communication
  • Other duties as assigned

Education/Years of Experience:

  • Required: High school diploma/GED and Technical School with CADD Certificate or equivalent experience and a minimum of 10 years of drafting experience with 5 years focused on independent design assignments and 5 years in roles that required leading multiple project efforts with less experienced designers and drafters in the energy, oil & gas, or utilities industry
  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree and 15 years of drafting experience with 10 years focused on independent design assignments and 5 years in roles that required leading multiple project efforts with less experienced designers and drafters in the energy, oil & gas, or utilities industry; PMP Certification

Other Requirements:

  • Demonstrates outstanding organizational/interpersonal skills and safety as the utmost priority
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications
