The Design Engineer I uses engineering techniques to design, maintain, or improve new or existing products and/or components for engineering projects within the area of assigned responsibility.
This position will serve our Water Heating Division, located in Montgomery, ALRelocation assistance is available.
Analyzes engineering sketches, specifications and related data and drawings to determine design factors such as size, shape and arrangement of parts.
Sketches rough layouts and computes angles, weights, surface areas, dimensions, radii, clearances, tolerances, leverages and location of holes.
Plan, coordinate, and check engineering changes prior to supervisory signature release to production.
Investigate and troubleshoot product design related problems and opportunities, documenting findings and performing corrective/improvement changes.
Reviews product design for compliance with engineering principles, agency standards, company standards and customer contract requirements, and related specifications.
Develop agency certification submittals and coordinate available testing with internal and external laboratories.
Develop evaluation test plans and coordinate with engineering designers and lab test engineers on test set-up, data acquisition, interpretation of data and means for achieving desired test results.
Write detailed engineering reports with analysis and summary of findings that will be shared with other departments and archived for historical reference.
Investigate pertinent factors such as inter-changeability, service requirements, and efficiency and agency requirements.
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating, and maintenance instructions and procedures.
Ability to work with mathematic concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
Strong reasoning and analytical skills (ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variable in situations)
Experience in appliance design preferred.
Experience in engineering/manufacturing change processes.
Experience in working with governing certification standards and agencies preferred.
Experience in manufacturing processes engineering and engineering computer systems including SolidWorks modeling software.
Occasional travel required.
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with attention to detail and accuracy.
Proficient computer skills and in-depth knowledge of relevant software such as MS Office Suite.
Demonstrated ability to work well with others in a matrix team environment.
HOW TO STAND OUT
Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
0-2 years of experience in design and manufacture of products
Knowledge of gas combustion principles.
Knowledge of heat pump design and heat exchanger optimization.
Knowledge of analysis & system development tools (e.g. ANSYS/Fluent, ANSYS/Mechanical, MATLAB, LabView, Pro/e, EnergyPlus, GT-SUITE, etc
