Design Engineer – Energy Infrastructure | Civil Engineering - Buffalo, NY

Buffalo, NY is a strong Western New York market for utility infrastructure, renewable energy, land development, and civil engineering. The region offers opportunities for engineers supporting utility projects and energy development that require site design, stormwater management, permitting, and coordination with infrastructure owners.

As a Design Engineer on Fisher's Energy Group, you'll support civil engineering design for solar, wind, electric and gas utilities, pipelines, and power systems. You'll apply your experience in civil site design, stormwater, utility coordination, environmental permitting, and construction while working with clients, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary teams.

This role offers the chance to work across a range of energy infrastructure projects while continuing to develop your technical and project delivery skills. You'll have opportunities to take ownership of design work, contribute to permitting decisions, and learn from experienced professionals while supporting projects that impact communities and critical infrastructure.

What You'll Do

• Design site layouts, grading, utilities, drainage, stormwater, and erosion control solutions.
• Develop plans, calculations, estimates, reports, and construction documents.
• Support stormwater and environmental permitting initiatives and ensure designs comply with state and local regulations, safety codes, and industry standards.
• Lead environmental assessments and permitting efforts while collaborating with clients and regulatory agencies to secure approvals.
• Support electric, gas, and telecom utility design and Environmental Management & Construction Plans (EM&CP).
• Oversee construction progress to ensure work follows plans and safety standards.
• Participate in project planning, coordinate engineering tasks with scope, schedule, and budget, and maintain accurate project records.
• Prepare proposals and cost estimates for renewable energy, oil & gas, and utility projects while supporting internal teams with documentation, coordination, and presentations.

Requirements

What We're Looking For

• B.S. degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• 5–10 years of civil engineering experience in energy, utilities, or land development.
• EIT required; PE preferred.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft Office.
• Experience with National Grid, National Fuel Gas, or other utility projects.

• Ability to own projects, prioritize effectively, and meet deliverables and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with MicroStation.
• Experience with local zoning and planning reviews, DOT permitting, NYS SEQR, and the ORES permitting process.
• Experience with stormwater design, calculations, and permitting.
• Experience with electric, gas, or telecom utility design.
• Experience with environmental permitting and EM&CP development.

Compensation + Benefits

Salary range: $83,000-$98,000

• Competitive compensation; actual pay varies based on experience, qualifications, education, and other factors and excludes the value of benefits.

This role is aligned to the Buffalo, NY market for energy infrastructure, utility design, renewable energy, civil site design, and permitting.
