Organization Overview

The Laboratory Protection Division of Brookhaven Lab protects Laboratory personnel, infrastructure and the environment taking an all-hazards approach with the goal of preventing, mitigating, responding and recovering from emergency events affecting the Laboratory. Consists of the Emergency Management, Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Rescue, and the Safeguards & Security groups.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking to hire a Security Specialist to support the Security Operations Program with responsibilities involving Security Risk Assessments (SRA), Operations Security (OPSEC), Personnel Security, and Planning. The selected candidate will serve as a technical resource and advisor on DOE security requirements, regulatory compliance, risk assessments, personnel security processes, and security planning activities in support of Laboratory operations and mission objectives.

This position reports to the Security Operations Manager. The hours of operations are Monday- Friday 7 to or 8am to 4:30pm

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct SRAs and ensure compliance with applicable DOE Orders, regulations, and guidance.
  • Support personnel security operations, including access authorization, security clearances, and compliance with DOE O 472.2A Personnel Security requirements.
  • Assist with maintaining surveillance of the Chemical Management System for hazardous materials that may exceed established security risk thresholds.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of Hazard Analyses, SRA documentation, Threat Assessments, and Site Security Plans.
  • Review, evaluate, and verify personnel security and operational documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses in security plans, policies, systems, and procedures; recommend corrective actions or process improvements.
  • Operate as a member of the Operations Security (OPSEC) Group, conduct OPSEC assessments, and support security-related inquiries, investigations, and program activities.
  • Conduct audits, assessments, reviews, and incident inquiries related to personnel security and security operations.
  • Coordinate with internal departments, contractors, management, and regulatory agencies on security matters.
  • Develop reports, training materials, presentations, and security briefings for employees, contractors, and management.
  • Maintain sensitive and confidential information in accordance with federal regulations and organizational policies.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in law enforcement, security, criminal justice, chemistry, business administration, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered on a 2:1 basis (experience: college).
  • Minimum of four years of related work experience supporting security operations, personnel security, protection programs, or response operations within a large-scale or complex facility.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE security requirements and federal security compliance programs.
  • Ability to operate independently, prioritize workload, and manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment.
  • Solid analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare professional reports, develop program materials, conduct presentations, and provide effective training to diverse audiences, including senior management.
  • Experience working with security databases, records management systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • U.S. citizenship required with the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” security clearance.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Working knowledge of DOE O 470.1A, DOE O 470.4C Safeguards and Security Program requirements, and DOE O 473.1A Physical Protection Program requirements.
  • Familiarity with DOE O 472.2A Personnel Security requirements.
  • Experience supporting DOE, military, federal, or national laboratory environments.

Environmental, Health, and Safety Requirements

Candidate may be required to:

  • Work protracted and/or irregular hours.
  • Perform extensive computer and keyboard work.
  • Work with or near moving machinery.
  • Work outdoors and in varying environmental conditions.
  • Wear and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Lift up to 40 pounds as required.

Other Information

  • Position is subject to 24-hour on-call responsibilities during emergencies and may require irregular work hours.
  • Travel requirements are less than 10%.
  • Relocation and housing costs will not be provided.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $82,950- $110,550 year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
