PEACE OFFICER “LATERAL TRANSFER”
A peace officer that possesses a current California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate or a peace officer that meets the requirements for the California Basic Course Waiver (this may apply to peace officers working outside of California)
A Deputy Sheriff assigned to Patrol may conduct both preliminary and follow-up investigations of disturbances, prowlers, burglaries, thefts, and other criminal incidents; prepares reports of arrests made, and investigations conducted: interviews victims, witnesses and suspects; gathers and preserves evidence, testifies and presents evidence in court; serves warrants and subpoenas; maintains contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserves good working relationships with the general public; performs related duties as assigned. An incumbent may apply for other assignments after completing the probationary period. Assignments may include the Burney Station, Lakehead or Shingletown resident posts. Possession of a current, valid Basic Law Enforcement Certificate awarded by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.); possession of an appropriate California driver license.
LATERAL TRANSFER: “Lateral transfer” or “Lateral hire” shall be defined consistent with P.O.S.T. regulations. In addition to the special requirement noted above, individuals considered for lateral transfer must have successfully completed one and one-half years of active service in a law enforcement agency with general law enforcement duties, and possess the following knowledge:
• Laws pertaining to search and seizure, arrest and interrogation of suspects;
• Rules of evidence and basic criminal law;
• Law enforcement vehicular and foot patrol techniques;
• Techniques of criminal investigation;
• Court procedures in criminal and civil cases.

The County has adopted a mandatory drug and alcohol testing policy for all individuals offered employment. All individuals offered employment with Shasta County must pass a pre-employment physical examination that includes drug and alcohol testing.
In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, County employees, in the event of a disaster are considered disaster workers and may be asked to respond accordingly.
Employees in this classification are covered under the 3% @ 50 CalPERS retirement program (not coordinated with Social Security). Shasta County pays the 9% employee contribution to CalPERS when a laterally hired deputy has three years of service credit with the CalPERS system or with a retirement plan that has reciprocity with CalPERS. This service credit may be achieved by combining service with Shasta County and service from another law enforcement agency that participates in the CalPERS retirement system or a system that has reciprocity with CalPERS.

Supplemental information

Applications are accepted on a continuous basis and they will be referred to the sheriff for individual consideration. Candidates will not be placed on a formal eligible list. Prior to appointment, all candidates must successfully complete a polygraph/cvsa, psychological evaluation, a medical examination, a personal background investigation and have an acceptable driving record according to the county driving policy.
