About the Role

Talarico for Texas is building a movement to take back power for working people. The campaign is seeking a full-time Deputy Press Secretary for Texas Press to support the communications team by traveling with the candidate and driving proactive narratives among Texas press. This is not an entry-level position.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the campaign’s Texas press strategy, working closely with the senior communications team to ensure message consistency and strategic alignment
  • Monitor news cycles in real time, identifying proactive earned media opportunities in local Texas press
  • Manage on-the-road press events and media engagement by coordinating logistics for interviews and public appearances
  • Collaborate closely with senior policy and communications teams to respond to local policy issues, including through in-person press conferences and events
  • Build and maintain relationships with reporters, TV producers, and bookers in order to pitch stories, shape narratives, and book interviews with the principal
  • Draft statements, talking points, press materials, and internal memos on press strategy
  • Work closely with the scheduling team to schedule interviews
  • Carry out special projects and other duties as necessary at the direction of the Press Secretary/Spokesperson

Requirements

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in political communications, journalism or another relevant field
  • Proven experience producing quality deliverables under tight deadlines and high pressure
  • Deep understanding of the Texas and national political landscape
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Willingness to travel extensively

James was born at Round Rock Hospital. After graduating from McNeil High School, he earned a bachelor’s degree in government from The University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in education policy from Harvard University. James taught 6th grade at an underserved public school where he worked with kids and

families to close the gaps in his classroom. He now serves as the local Executive Director of a nonprofit that provides innovative technology to thousands of our students. James is committed to working with everyone — Republicans, Democrats, and Independents — to move Texas forward.
