The NC Arts Council is looking for an enthusiastic Deputy Director to join our team! The Deputy Director of the North Carolina Arts Council provides executive level support to the agency’s Executive Director and is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of the agency’s extensive programs.
The Deputy Director works closely with the Executive Director on developing and implementing the agency’s strategic plan and recommends policy that advances the arts in the state. This position directly and indirectly supervises the majority of agency staff; assists with budget development and oversight; board meeting planning and implementation; preparation of legislative, departmental and other requests, reports and materials; and is responsible for leading and managing the agency in director’s absence.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage and implement the Arts Council’s $11 million grant programs, which provide federal, private, and state funds to over 1,000 arts and community organizations and individuals annually and recommend program and policy changes to address the needs of the state and the arts industry.
• Seek and manage federal and Foundation grants and assist with preparation of legislative, departmental and other requests, reports and materials.
• Provide executive level support to the Executive Director, with budget development and oversight, board meeting planning and implementation.
• Oversee the development and implementation of the agency’s strategic planning process, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of agency’s programs, and lead and manage the agency in director’s absence.
• Supervise 13 of the agency’s 26 employees, including direct supervision of 3 senior program directors and one program director and indirect supervision of 9 program and administrative staff, and work with staff to more effectively partner with diverse and rural communities.
• Make presentations and represent the agency at national and state events and conferences; making site visits to attend constituent events and meeting with artists and arts leaders.

Recruitment Range: $70,478-$105,000

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following are preferred:
Demonstrated knowledge of North Carolina’s non-profit arts sector; knowledge of state, local and/or federal arts grantmaking practices; and knowledge of issues related to arts and/or experience in diverse and underserved communities.
Demonstrated experience evaluating the needs of the arts field.
Demonstrated experience establishing and/or administering sound, effective programs and policies and to supervise, motivate, and evaluate highly qualified personnel.
Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication and public speaking skills and ability to make effective public presentations.
Position/Physical Requirements
Typical work schedule is Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:30pm.
Ability to participate in night and weekend arts activities and to travel in state and occasionally out of state as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution
and
Three (3) years of program experience related to the area of assignment,
including
One year of supervisory program experience;
or
An equivalent combination of training and experience.

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference
