Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed at moving the city towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. The New York City Department of Correction Applicant Investigation Unit seeks an experienced candidate to serve as the Deputy Director of Investigations. Under the direction of the Executive Director, with latitude to exercise independent judgement and initiative, the Deputy Director of Investigations will be responsible for ensuring the timely completion of the Probationary Correction Officer follow up investigations by coordinating with internal and external law enforcement operations to detect any derogatory findings including but not limited to: warrants, orders of protection, court cases, driving history; manage and direct the Internal Review Unit to determine if a case should proceed with disqualification or requires additional investigation; manage the Social Media Team and the Call Monitoring Team; and perform other related duties as assigned. In addition, the Deputy Director of Investigations will be responsible for the management of all internal investigations.

The Deputy Director of Investigations will also provide leadership in the achievement of the Unit’s priorities and goals including but not limited to; being a change agent helping to move the unit forward; maintain and enhance relationships with City agencies and local, state and national law enforcement agencies; research and implement local and nation-wide investigative best practices; monitor staff performance by ensuring adequate accountability metrics are established within the internal investigation unit; develop work plans and timelines for projects, identify milestones, and manage projects to completion; complete and submit reports as required; support and engage senior leadership; perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory full-time experience conducting investigations to identify or gather evidence of criminal activity or fraud, or to verify or evaluate qualifications of persons for employment or licensure, 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity or supervising a staff performing investigations or related work; or

2. An associate degree or 60 credits from an accredited college and six years of satisfactory full-time experience as described in "1" above; or

3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and eight years of satisfactory experience as described in "1" above; or

4. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2", or "3" above. However, all candidates must have the 18 months of experience in an administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory capacity as described in "1" above.
