Summary

The purpose of this position is to investigate and determine the cause and manner of death in all unattended deaths within Beaufort County.

Examples of duties

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Performs body exams, including history taking, interviews with investigators, family, and or police and medical chart review.
  • Performs and formulates on-call and scene investigation/triage decisions.
  • Communicates with police, court, and family members.
  • Generates death certificates.
  • Packs and labels evidence items.
  • Reviews, approves, and records cremation requests.
  • Participates in quality control, assessment, and improvement activities.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by specialized education or training equivalent to the completion of one (1) year of college-level coursework.
  • Requires a minimum of one (1) year of related professional experience.
  • Relevant qualifying experience includes experience in one or more of the following areas: law enforcement investigations; emergency medical services as a Paramedic; nursing; death investigation as a Deputy Coroner; or autopsy/morgue services as an Autopsy Technician.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Must obtain and maintain American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) certification within two (2) years of hire.
  • IMPORTANT: Applicants must attach copies of all applicable certifications and licenses to their application.

Supplemental information

All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment. Employment is contingent upon clearing both the drug screening and background investigation.
