Summary

This position is responsible for performing a variety of clerical support work for the Commissioner of the Revenue Office in one or more of the following areas: vehicle registrations, personal property, income tax, real estate, tax software support, and general office operations. Duties may include issuing various licenses, assessing various taxes, creating reports, various administrative duties, developing presentations and drafting executive correspondence, and preparing a variety of routine documents.

Examples of duties

  • Establishes and maintains tax accounts for assessment purposes.
  • Assesses the value and taxes on property within Isle of Wight County.
  • Ensures completeness and accuracy of all information entered for assessment purposes.
  • Makes adjustments on assessments as necessary.
  • Prepares, verifies, and processes refund requests for taxpayers.
  • Assists with audit of the division of motor vehicles files as compared with the Isle of Wight County personal property databases.
  • Assists taxpayers with real estate, state income tax and personal property questions.
  • Updates tax relief applications and assists taxpayers with filling out forms and entering information into Munis.
  • Maintains all vehicle registration files and customer accounts for personal property assessment purposes into the county database for all customers within Isle of Wight County.
  • Maintains compliance with county record retention laws.
  • Researches possible errors/discrepancies supplied by a MUNIS excel report, requiring research between MUNIS and DMV, and makes possible adjustments/corrections as needed.
  • Researches and compiles a variety of information for reports.
  • Receives walk-in customers, correspondence, and phone calls pertaining to assessments.
  • Enters all vehicle information (vehicle registration clerk) into the computer system which registers the vehicle with the County.
  • Performs office work to include preparation of written letters to taxpayers regarding assessments and related duties.
  • Posts research results to appropriate databases and operates various office machines.
  • Provides tax relief as necessary.
  • Assists the public with questions in any of these and other general areas of the department.
  • Accepts, receives, and/or collects payments.
  • Observes all approved safety and health policies and procedures pertaining to his/her work activities and performs all work tasks in a safe and healthy manner in accordance with County policy.
  • Performs other assigned duties.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Requires the use of fingers, grasping, hearing, lifting, mental acuity, reaching, speaking, talking, and visual acuity.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; Associate’s degree preferred;
  • Three (3) years of related work experience;
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.

While some will perform their regular duties, others may be assigned to report at a different time and location and to perform different duties from their regular jobs. Employees will either be deemed essential personnel and provide services that must continue regardless of or pursuant to a state of emergency or will be deemed nonessential personnel that will be required to report to work in an emergency if they receive an assignment to shelter duty or other duty.
