The UNM Department of Sociology & Criminology is seeking a highly motivated, collegial, and student-oriented professional to serve as our Department Administrator R1. Our department is a vibrant intellectual community of approximately 18 full-time faculty, 40 graduate students, and 600 undergraduate majors in Sociology and Criminology.

We are looking for an experienced administrator with demonstrated supervisory and team-building skills, strong interpersonal and problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities and work effectively with others, often on tight timelines.

The Department Administrator R1 plays a crucial leadership role in the department. The person in this position will oversee and administer programs, strategies, and initiatives designed to develop, enhance, and support the mission of our department. They will also oversee all internal and external business activities, accounting and finance, and human resources, and manage and coordinate facility and resource management, information services, and general department administration. Working closely with the Chair and faculty as a member of the department's leadership team, they will contribute to strategic and operational decision-making and organizational planning.

Conditions of Employment Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 2 years of experience managing at least one of the following functional areas: fiscal services, administration and/or human resources AND 3 years of additional experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated supervisory and team leadership experience, including performance evaluation, coaching, professional development, team-building, and addressing performance concerns.
  • Knowledge of and experience applying business policies and procedures in a university or other complex organizational setting.
  • Experience with hiring and personnel administration, including recruitment, onboarding, promotion and tenure processes, and personnel policies. Experience using UNMJobs or an analogous large-university system is preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience with accounting and financial management, including budget development and monitoring, fund transfers, invoices and purchase orders, expenditures, financial reporting, and financial record keeping.
  • Experience with financial and administrative systems, including Banner Finance, MyReports, Chrome River, LoboMart, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Smartsheet, SharePoint, or comparable systems.
  • Experience with contracts, grants, or sponsored-program administration, preferably in a university or research environment.
  • Experience coordinating class schedules, scholarships, student funding, or other student-support processes.
  • Experience coordinating and organizing meetings and special events.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, administrators, and colleagues across the university.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, exercise sound judgment, and attend to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive personnel, financial, and student information with discretion.
