
Department Heads ensure an exemplary education is being delivered in their department. This role is responsible for overseeing both the General Construction and Plumbing programs, ensuring curriculum integrity, hands-on training quality, and alignment with industry standards across multiple skilled trades. Department Heads enforce instructor accountability, address students’ issues, verify that classes start and end on time, order supplies needed for their department’s classes, and perform other critical operational and academic functions.
Compensation:
$85,000 to $95,000
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Monitor all classes in the respective department first thing in the morning and multiple times throughout the day to ensure proper education is taking place with sufficient supplies.
Enforce timely start-up, dismissal, and break times for classes in the respective department.
Provide direct oversight of both General Construction and Plumbing program instruction, ensuring students receive comprehensive, hands-on training in carpentry, electrical basics, and plumbing systems including pipefitting, drainage, and water supply systems.
Ensure curriculum delivery aligns with industry standards and safety regulations across all trades within the department.
Cover an instructor’s class for the respective department if they are running late or cannot come to work. (This is the Department Head’s only function until the class can be covered by another instructor.)
Oversee the make-up classes and processes for the respective department to ensure proper education is consistently delivered.
Ensure all rosters, report cards, make-up forms, spreadsheets, statements, and other necessary paperwork the instructor utilizes for class are completed in a timely manner per state and accrediting standards.
Address all student needs and concerns in a timely manner with appropriate follow-up, including those related to multi-trade training paths within General Construction and Plumbing.
Support instructors in maintaining safe shop environments, enforcing OSHA standards, proper tool usage, and adherence to safety protocols across all trades.
Comply, and ensure instructor compliance, with employment requirements including, but not limited to, the timely response to Oracle, email, grade submissions, payroll submissions, etc.
Review SAP/PELL reports with Program Support and take necessary actions as needed.
Organize and lead faculty meetings, safety meetings, and segment change meetings on a regular basis, ensuring alignment across both Plumbing and General Construction instructional teams.
Coordinate and order supplies, tools, and materials specific to plumbing systems, carpentry, electrical training needs.
Evaluate instructor performance across multiple trades and provide coaching to ensure high-quality, consistent instruction.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education and Job Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent.
BPSS license within the trade(s).
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in plumbing, electrical, and carpentry trades, with demonstrated hands-on knowledge across multiple disciplines.
Experience supervising or leading multi-trade construction or plumbing teams strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of entry-level equipment and tools used in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and general construction.
Working knowledge or ability to learn Microsoft 365 and Google Classroom.
Strong understanding of plumbing systems, construction methods, and job site safety standards.
Ability to manage and support instructors across multiple trades and training environments
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work
The Department Head is expected to, at least one day a week, work until 8pm (up to 10pm if needed) to ensure the efficacy of the Evening programs for both the General Construction and Plumbing departments.
