Summary:
Candidate must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and have successfully completed a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) training program or certification. Additionally, the candidate must have passed the dental X-ray (radiation safety) examination and hold a current Registered Dental Assistant license issued by the Dental Board of California. Minimum of one year of office, management experience is required with computerized data system experience. Preference given to candidates with at least one year of dental assisting experience in the clinical setting. New graduate applicants considered in exceptional circumstances. Must have a CPR (BLS Provider) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation. Candidate must have the ability to work with various types of patients from the young to the elderly. Use of digital radiographs and electronic dental record keeping. Proper phone etiquette and ability to use various Microsoft Office programs. The Dental Receptionist provides front desk customer relation services to RSBCIHI patients and staff, and completes clerical duties to facilitate the daily operation of the Dental Department. On occasion, the receptionist may be called on to assist with patient care, thus the receptionist should also maintain RDA licensure. The incumbent must be professional, detail-oriented, possess exceptional interpersonal skills,, and be able to handle a fast-paced environment. Must be able to work with the Indian community and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Greets and welcomes patients. Assures that all appropriate in-take forms have been filled out before the patient’s chart is given to the back office. Ensures that new patient demographics is updated on forms and in the computer.
- Checks out patient. Ensures that subsequent, follow-up and recall appointments are scheduled, as directed by the dentist and hygienist. Maintains appointment book on the computer with appropriate blocking and closures. Confirms all appointments for the following day.
- Responsible for maintaining the patient records in a confidential manner. Responsible for obtaining and completion of insurance forms and pre-authorizations for Dent-Cal, personal billing or any other funding source that is applicable. Works closely with Billing Director in implementing billing procedures.
- Responsible for making appropriate patient referrals to Patient Services for Medi-Cal eligibility inquiries, patient advocate contacts, and any other patient-centered issues
- Responsible for collecting fees, giving patients receipts, posting payments and submitting/depositing monies with paperwork.
- Responsible for submitting lab invoices for payment to Purchase Referred Care and Billing with appropriate paperwork
- Maintains a variety of recurring reports related to dental activities as is requested by the Dental Director or Supervisor.
- Following specialist referrals, ensures that post-operative reports are received, reviewed by a dentist and scanned in the patient’s chart.
- Performs clinic-support activities that may include chair-side assistance.
- This position shall require working on weekends and evenings, if needed.
Other Duties :
- In absence of Dental Assistant, assists dentist at chair-side as anticipated or required in all phases of general dentistry, always following RDA licensure allowable duties. Passes instruments and materials to and retrieves them from the dentist; keeps area of operation clear using high speed evacuator, suction tip and irrigation; retracts tissue, tongue and cheek.
- Charts examinations and treatment information as relayed by dentist on patient records.
- Sterilizes instruments, materials and equipment; prepares cassette tray.
- Maintains dental equipment in a clean and operative condition.
- Other duties as may be required to effectively carry out daily operations of the dental program and provide quality care to patients.
Performance Standards:
- The receptionist is responsible for scheduling dental patients and ensuring the treating dentist is appropriate for the treatment that is to be performed.
- The receptionist helps coordinate the Recall System with the hygienist.
- The receptionist maintains the Short-Call List
- Report to work promptly at scheduled times; use PTO appropriately as stated in the Human Resources Manual
- Attend scheduled Dental Department Meetings and In-Service Seminars.
- Keep any dental licenses current by attending continuing education.
- Provide coverage as a dental assistant when needed.

QualificationsEducation:

Physical Demands:
Long periods of sitting, standing, bending, and walking are required. Assistant shall wear surgical mask and eyeglasses when assisting during some treatments to protect against flying debris, infectious disease, etc., and uses a lead apron and shield as protection against radiation.

Compensation:
$22.00–$25.00 per hour ($45,760–$52,000 annually, depending on experience and internal equity)
