BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the clinical direction of a licensed Dentist, the incumbent assists dentists and other dental healthcare providers during the examination and treatment of patients and performs other supportive functions. Work involves exposure to communicable diseases, radiation, and flying debris, therefore personal protective equipment appropriate to the task

required by Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) will be worn at all times.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs routine chairside assisting, and accurately records diagnostic information and treatment.
  2. Responsible for day to day maintenance of all Dental areas, including cleanliness of Dental areas.
  3. Provides diagnostic aid including exposing radiographs, recording medical and dental histories.
  4. Educates patients regarding treatment and home care.
  5. Performs all routine dental equipment maintenance and monitoring for quality assurance. Monitors inventory, orders supplies and maintains adequate levels of supplies.
  6. Prepares and maintains dental operatory according to department's policy and procedures.
  7. Assists in dental laboratory with, but not limited to; model duplication, appliance fabrication, etc.
  8. Performs basic office procedures including answering telephones, scheduling patients.
  9. Upholds and promotes the value and integrity of the Seneca Nation Health System's mission statement. Will promote SNHS in a positive manner.
  10. Provides care through a trauma-informed lens by incorporating key principles of both physical and psychological environment safety, trustworthiness and transparency, collaboration of decision-making during treatment plan developments, empowerment of patients by recognizing and building upon individual strengths, as well as recognizing and respecting the diversity of cultural backgrounds and sensitivity.
  11. Participates and completes all mandatory staff meetings, trainings, and in-services.
  12. Follows all policies and procedures of the department, Seneca Nation Health System, and Seneca Nation.
  13. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients of all ages as described in the department's policies and procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Must be physically fit to sit, walk, stand, and bend as necessary for long periods of time and occasionally lift supplies weighing no more than 25 lbs.
  • Computer proficient with up to one years' experience in a clinical healthcare setting.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Entry level Dental Assistant: registered to take the Dental Assisting National Board examination, entering the IHS Dental Assistant competency program, or enrolled in a Dental Assistant vocational program.
  • CPR/BLS certification required.

The Seneca Nation Health System (SNHS) is recognized as a non-profit public health organization and maintains a federal contract with Indian Health Services (IHS) under under the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (ISDEAA) of 1975 (public law 93-638 Title 1). SNHS was established in 1976 as a tribal program and has continuously provided ambulatory health care in the Allegany and Cattaraugus Territories.

The health care facilities offer programs developed under the public health model. These facilities are the Lionel R. John Health Center (LRJHC), the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation Health Center (CIRHC) and Community Health and Wellness Center (CHWC).

Health services are offered to those persons within the Purchased/Referred Care Services Delivery Area who are defined as eligible under federal and tribal guidelines. These services areas include the counties of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Niagara (excluding the Tonawanda and Tuscarora Territories) and Erie in New York and Warren County in Pennsylvania.

Our programs provide a full range of primary and preventive care for acute and chronic illness and injuries. In addition, we have service agreements with several local hospitals, professional groups and agencies for inpatient treatment and specialty care to round out our health programs.

The Lionel R. John Health Center and Cattaraugus Indian Reservation Health Center have been recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) as a Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home. And NCQA has also recognized the Diabetes Program at LRJHC.
