Job Description

Join Axpo Iberia’s Forecasting team and gain hands-on experience in building, testing, and automating advanced demand prediction models for Spain and Portugal. This internship offers the opportunity to work directly with real energy market data, apply Python/SQL and statistical methods, and explore machine learning approaches to improve forecast accuracy. What you will do:

• Data ingestion & cleaning: SQL extraction, preprocessing, and feature engineering (holidays, weather, calendar effects).

• Modelling & backtesting: implement and compare models (ARIMA/ETS, regularized regression, gradient boosting, hierarchical approaches), time-series CV and rolling-window backtests.

• Metrics & quality: compute and track MAE/MAPE/RMSE, bias analysis, drift, and outlier detection.

• Automation: build reproducible pipelines (scripts/notebooks and light orchestration) with Git version control.

• Visualization & reporting: create clear dashboards and model reports (Power BI/Tableau or similar).

• Documentation & reading: maintain model notes, assumptions, and changelogs while staying updated with relevant docs/papers/blogs.

• Collaboration: work with other departments to capture requirements and deliver what-if analyses.

What you bring & who you are:

• Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, or Computer Science.

• Evidence of further education in data analysis/time series (MOOCs, university electives, certifications).

• Willingness to keep learning via internal mentoring, reading groups, and documented experiments.

• Proficiency in Python (pandas, numpy; valued: scikit-learn, statsmodels), SQL, and Git.

• Knowledge of time-series basics: seasonality, stationarity, feature engineering, rolling backtests.

• Familiarity with model evaluation metrics (MAE/MAPE/RMSE, bias analysis, monitoring/drift).

• Data visualization & reporting skills (Power BI/Tableau) and concise technical write-ups.

• Ideally, understanding of energy market demand drivers (weather/calendar effects) and Iberian market data basics (OMIE/REE/REN).

• Spanish required; Portuguese desirable.
