
Deli Counter Service
Substitute position, varied hours
The Co-op frequently hires substitute employees to cover absences and planned time off. Substitutes earn an hourly wage, accrue a paid time off benefit, and are eligible for the employee discount on Co-op purchases. In addition, substitutes have preferred access over outside applicants to jobs with regular hours at the Co-op. Substitutes may work a range of hours up to 40 hours weekly, depending on the Co-op's need and the substitute's availability. The most common substitute positions are cashier, grocery clerk, and prepared foods worker. Substitutes must work a minimum of 48 hours per quarter to maintain sub status.
Status: Reports to Deli Assistant Manager
Pay Grade 2
Purpose: To provide prompt, friendly, helpful customer service at the deli counter, including taking and fulfilling orders for espresso drinks, slicing meats, sandwiches, and services offered at the deli counter. To help the Deli meet goals for sales, margin, labor expense and customer service. Adhere to standards and guides of Deli policies.
Responsibilities
• Serve customers from sandwich counter, meat and cheese cases, and espresso bar in prompt, friendly, and courteous manner.
• Adhere to menu, recipes and portioning when fulfilling orders.
• Fulfill customer orders in timely and accurate fashion.
• Slice cheese and meat to order for customers.
• Stock deli and cheese displays cases fully to give feeling of abundance.
• Ensure freshness of deli and cheese items by rotating and keeping batches separate by date.
• Label or sign items with price and ingredients where appropriate.
• Assist with food preparation in kitchen as necessary.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by Assistant Deli Manager.
• Attend departmental meetings.
• Be responsible for safety in the workplace by creating a safe work environment, reporting safety concerns to a manager or member of the Safety Committee, and adhering to safety rules and regulations.
• Follow department policies and procedures.
Customer Service
• Treat customers fairly, consistently, and with respect.
• Ensure efficient, friendly and informative service according to established customer service vision and standards.
• Begin customer transaction with a friendly greeting.
• End customer transaction with a pleasant farewell.
• Familiarity with co-op policies and procedures in order to answer customer questions.
• Address customer suggestions, comments, and complaints; refer written complaints and issues to Deli supervision when necessary.
Department Maintenance
• Pull old or low-quality items, record and promptly dispose of them, following established procedures.
• Maintain counter area, deli cases, coffee bar and kitchen in sanitary and orderly condition following health department regulations; wash dishes and utensils, clean surfaces, remove trash and recyclables promptly, sweep and mop floors and walk-ins.
• Bus and clean seating area, stock condiments, wipe down tables and chairs, sweep and mop floor as needed.
• Follow safety, storage and labeling procedures.
• Follow transfer record-keeping procedures with products from other departments.
• Carry out established opening and closing procedures.
