Job Description

Position: Deck Manager

Salary: $21.83-$27.02, based on program assistant contract, level 4

Starting Date: as soon as possbile

Location: Plymouth and Sandburg Middle School Pools

Work Schedule: 15-20 hours weekly, typically Tues/Thurs, 5-8:30 pm and weekends (must be able to work two Saturdays a month, typically 10:00 - 2:00 pm)

Summary

The Community Education Aquatics team is responsible for providing safe, high-quality swim lessons to all participants. Staff are required to communicate with students and families, clearly explaining expectations, lesson objectives, and outcomes.

Essential Functions

All staff must:

  • Maintain a safe environment for all participants and staff
  • Know and enforce all program policies and rules
  • Follow established emergency procedures
  • Respond effectively in an emergency situation
  • Maintain current required certifications
  • Inspect pool area for cleanliness, safety hazards, and unsafe conditions
  • Maintain a professional appearance while on duty
  • Arrive on time in proper uniformParticipate in in-service training and staff development

Deck Manager is responsible for:

  • Open/close the pool before and after swim lessons
  • Collect time cards on a bi-weekly basis to be turned in to the Aquatics Coordinator
  • Work with staff to implement swim lessons during session
  • Complete and maintain Red Cross WSI, LG, and LGI certifications
  • Assist the Aquatics Coordinator with swim lesson schedules
  • Schedule swim staff for seasonal lessons and any changes needed due to registration or staff call-outs
  • Hold regular staff meetings and in-service
  • Help meet grant deliverables and program goals as outlined by the CEE Program Director

Deck Manager will share the following responsibilities with the Swim Coordinator:

  • Recruit, interview and hire swim staff in conjunction with Program Director
  • Promote all aquatics programs
  • Monitor staff certifications and program equipment needs
  • Update and maintain swim staff handbook and emergency action plan following safety rules and regulations
  • Create and maintain lesson plans, certificates, and skills reports
  • Offer a high level of customer service to create access and opportunity for community engagement with the Aquatics Program
  • Work with Program Director to expand Aquatics offerings

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Ability to work with people from various cultures
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service and problem solving skills while dealing tactfully and courteously with the public
  • Able to attend work regularly and report to work in a timely manner
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, and First-Aid Certificates within two months of hire
  • LGI certification preferred

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Work is performed in a standard pool environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes, swim equipment or heavier materials with help from others, and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category requires walking or standing to a significant degree and may involve sitting, swimming, and entering/exiting the pool.
