Summary

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks a General Maintenance Technician. This is a permanent, full-time (12-month position, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

The Dean of Students is responsible for the overall management and supervision of the campus life program (residence life and student engagement), which includes approximately 300 students. The Dean of Students is responsible for providing oversight for a comprehensive co-curricular program and training and supporting 7 professional staff members and 12 to 13 paraprofessionals.

Responsibilities of the Dean of Students:

  • Recruits, supervises, trains, and evaluates all campus life staff members, directly supervising the Residence Life Coordinators and the SAC Coordinator.
  • Provides direction and evaluation as appropriate in the programmatic functions of the campus life program and plans curriculum toward leadership development and engagement to include assessing student interests and supporting student organizations and their advisors.
  • Serves as the chief judicial officer for most Level 2 infractions and the primary investigator for those alleged violations, which includes referring potential Level 3 infractions for Judicial Council review and interpreting community standards.
  • Assigns and allocates housing to residential students; directs the implantation of information management systems related to student housing and discipline.
  • Responds to after hour emergences in the residence hall and those involving residential students.
  • Manages departmental budget; maintains accurate records and processes for reporting information and prepares management reports.
  • Participates and supports New Student Orientation and PAC.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and required by the Vice President for Student Development.

Examples of duties

A master's degree in counseling, student personnel administration, higher education administration, or related field required with five to seven years of full-time, progressive residence life and student affairs experience with high school or undergraduate students. Background must include residence hall management, developmental programming, staff training, and conduct-related experience. The ability to work with diverse populations and mentor young professionals in residential or student success settings is required.

Additional Requirements:

  • Some evening and weekend work is required. The Dean of Students is expected to respond to evening and weekend emergencies, so it is recommended that the person holding this position live within a reasonable proximity to campus.
