Dean of Nursing

The Dean of Nursing is responsible for providing leadership in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing program. At the same time, the Dean must facilitate responsiveness by the program to the needs of the community and the healthcare system as well as foster, within the program, an organizational culture that supports collegiality, personal well-being, and professional developmentof students, faculty, and staff. The Dean also servesastherepresentativeof theprogramtotheCollege/Campusadministration, regulatoryand accreditationbodies, EducationAffiliatesNursingDivision, thelocaladvisorycommittee,andto other internal and external constituencies.

EssentialDutiesand Responsibilities:

  1. Works effectively as part of the overall faculty and administrative teams to include interpersonalrelations,collaboratingwithfacultymemberstomeetstudentneeds,and responding to requests from executive management.
  1. Collaborateseffectivelyandpositivelywiththecampusleadershipteamtoensure campus mission is met
  1. OrganizationStewardship
  1. Establishes and implements written policies in cooperation with the faculty and meetsthestandardsoftheapplicableStateBoardofNursingandanyotheraccreditingagencies.
  1. SubmitstotheStateBoardof Nursingandotherregulatingandaccreditingagenciesall required reports and self-study documents including reports of program or curriculum changes, in a timely manner in accordance with regulations.
  1. Leadschangethatassuresqualityandeffectivenessof programsandmeetstheneedsof the community. Specific examples are required
  1. Plans, implements, andmaintainsminutesforregular meetingsofthefaculty, the advisory board,and the variouscommitteestofacilitatecommunicationandtoplan,implement,andevaluate curricula, policies, procedures, and programs.
  1. Maintainsacurrentfileofwrittenagreementswithallcooperatingagenciesand preceptors.
  1. Participates in liaison activities with government, civic, labor, and private organizations inthecommunitytopromotecommunityunderstandingandsupportofnursingeducation programs.
  1. ParticipatesasappropriateonCollege/Campuscommitteesandtaskforces.
  1. Participatesinthedevelopmentofanapprovedbudgetandmanagesexpenditureswithin the guidelines of that budget.
  1. Establishes and implements policies for admission of students to the program, readmissionandadvancedstanding,progressionintheprogram,andprogramcompletion in collaboration with the faculty and College/Campus staff.
  1. Maintainsfaculty filesasitrelatesto accreditationneeds.
  1. ProgramDevelopmentandManagement
  1. Develops, implements, evaluates, andrevises curriculum for the nursing program in cooperationwiththeprogramfacultyandwithinthestandardsof theapplicablestate Board of Nursing and any other accrediting agencies.
  1. Establishesandupdatesasneeded,acomprehensive,writtensystematicplanof evaluation for the nursing programs that includes data collection from faculty, instructional personnel, students, graduates, and employers of graduates.
  1. Reviewsandrecommendsrequestsformaterials,equipmentandrepairs,alterations,or any purchases of labor, materials, supplies, or services for the programs.
  1. ProvidesappropriatecertificationtotheStateBoardof Nursingforstudentswho complete program requirements and are recommended for NCLEX Exam.
  1. Determines the faculty-student ratio for clinical experiences in accordance with the regulationsof theapplicablestateBoardofNursingincollaborationwithnursingfaculty and clinical agency administrators.
  1. Assistsindevelopingmarketingcommunicationsfortheprogramsandinstudent recruitment activities.
  1. Works with faculty and staff to develop and implement strategies to assist in student retention.
  1. FocusesonpositivegraduateNCLEXsuccessthroughcurrentandgraduatestudent engagement
  1. Faculty/StudentDevelopment and Management
  1. Recruitsandinterviewspotentialfacultyandmakesrecommendationsforappointment, promotion, retention, or termination as appropriate.
    1. EvaluatesfacultyinaccordancewithpoliciesoftheCollege/Campus,EA,andthe standards of applicable regulatory bodies.
    1. Developsandimplementsorientationproceduresandin-serviceeducationforfaculty.
    1. Counselsstudentsandfaculty;problemsolves,andfacilitateswithindividuals/groupsin the interest of student and program success.
    1. Conductsclassroomobservationstocoachand developfaculty members.
    1. ProfessionalDevelopmentPlan
    1. Attendsworkshopsandrelevantcontinuingeducationaimedatearningthenecessary CEU’s for license requirements and professional growth.
    1. Demonstratesprofessionalinvolvementandleadershipthroughparticipationin professional organizations, presentations, publications, etc.
    1. CompletesCollege/CampusannualFacultyDevelopmentPlan.
    1. PursuesaDNP orPhDinNursingdegree

    Skills/Competencies/Qualifications:

    • CurrentactiveunencumberedlicensureasaregisterednurseorAPRNinstateof college/campus or multistate privilege to practice nursing in state.
    • Graduateof anapprovedprofessionalnursingeducationprogram.
    • BaccalaureatedegreeinnursingandearnedMaster’sorDoctoraldegreeinnursingfor Associate Degree program and an earned baccalaureate degree in nursing with enrollment and progress toward a Master degree in nursing for Practical Nursing program
    • AtleastfiveyearspracticeexperienceasaRegisteredNurse, withatleastthree yearsasa faculty member in a professional nursing education program.
    • Minimumofone(1)yearsuccessful experienceinanadministrativeormanagement role.
    • Competentinpersonalcomputerapplications:wordprocessing,spreadsheet,database, and email.
    • Excellentwritten,oralcommunication,andanalyticalskills.
    • Abilitytoserveasapositive,supportive, andenthusiasticrole model.
    • Successfulcompletionofcriminalbackgroundcheck,drugscreening,appropriate immunizations and CPR and HIPAA certification.
