Position: Dean of General Education
The Dean of General Education serves as the academic and operational leader for all general education programs, overseeing faculty, curriculum, and student success. This role ensures compliance with institutional policies and accreditation standards while driving excellence in teaching, including traditional and virtual laboratory-based sciences such as Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology.
Administrative and Leadership
- The Dean of General Education reports directly to the Chief Academic Officer.
- Monitor and evaluate direct reports, including general education faculty and lab coordinators.
- Ensure compliance with institutional, state, and accreditation requirements.
- Represent the General Education department at institutional meetings and committees.
- Prepare and maintain program statistics, reports, and records.
- Submit information for annual operating and capital budgets.
- Lead faculty in preparation for accreditation self-studies.
- Conduct regular performance management, one-on-ones, and professional development for faculty.
General Operations
- Notify leadership of any legal or compliance issues promptly.
- Manage budget and resource allocation for general education programs.
- Lead strategic planning and set long-range goals aligned with institutional objectives.
- Promote positive leadership and employee morale consistent with SEC core values.
Laboratory Scheduling and Virtual Lab Integration
- Oversee scheduling and coordination of science labs (physical and virtual).
- Ensure proper implementation of online lab methodologies and virtual simulation platforms.
- Collaborate with faculty and lab coordinators to maintain compliance with safety protocols for both physical and virtual labs.
- Evaluate appropriateness of lab facilities and virtual tools for curricular experiences.
- Recommend and manage procurement of lab equipment, software, and virtual learning resources.
Faculty
- Responsible for hiring, retention, and development of general education faculty.
- Manage faculty orientation, onboarding, and training (including virtual lab technologies).
- Develop faculty workload schedules and ensure compliance with accreditation standards.
- Provide guidance on instructional methodologies for classroom and online delivery.
- Facilitate faculty development in innovative teaching strategies and virtual lab integration.
Students
- Provide advisement and resolve student concerns related to general education courses.
- Coordinate activities related to student admission, retention, progression, and graduation.
- Support student success initiatives, including proactive outreach for at-risk students.
- Ensure students receive orientation and resources for virtual lab participation.
Curriculum
- Oversee development and continuous improvement of general education curriculum.
- Ensure alignment of science courses with programmatic requirements and institutional mission.
- Collaborate with faculty to integrate virtual lab experiences and technology-enhanced learning.
- Review end-of-course evaluations and implement improvements.
- Coordinate textbook and resource ordering in partnership with the registrar.
Committee Service
- Chair general education faculty meetings.
- Serve on institutional committees such as Curriculum, Student Success, and Evaluation.
- Collaborate with other academic leaders to ensure interdisciplinary alignment.

QualificationsMaster’s degree in a science discipline required; Doctorate preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in higher education, including lab-based sciences (Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology).
Demonstrated experience in virtual laboratory instruction and online lab methodologies.
Prior academic leadership experience strongly preferred.
