Job Description

Six Construct, a subsidiary of the BESIX Group, is the largest Belgian construction company operating in the Middle East. The company combines the efforts of a highly skilled workforce, along with strategic planning and innovative use of technology to overcome the most complex business challenges. Six Construct is a multi-services company that operates in the construction of commercial and residential buildings, sport and leisure facilities, infrastructure and marine-related projects. The company currently employs a workforce of approximately 4,000 in the Middle East, and a total of 10,000 worldwide.

Why This Role Matters?

The DCS (Distributed Control System) & Instrumentation Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the sewage treatment plant. This position supports the heart of the plant’s automation and control processes, directly impacting performance, compliance, and operational stability.

What You Will Drive

A DCS & Instrumentation Engineer with a strong background in ABB DCS (e.g., ABB 800xA, Freelance) and SCADA systems for sewage treatment plant (STP) operations. The role involves end-to-end responsibility for process control, instrumentation asset reliability, and industrial communications, with a particular focus on maintaining the health of Profibus (DP/PA) networks. The engineer must have experience working in corrosive, H₂S-prone STP environments, ensuring safety, compliance, continuous operations, and optimized plant performance.

  • DCS / SCADA & Control Systems
    • Administer, operate, and optimize ABB DCS, including control strategies, graphics, alarms, trends, historian tags, and backup/restore.
    • Maintain and enhance SCADA interfaces, dashboards, and reporting for O&M and compliance KPIs.
    • Develop, test, and implement logic modifications (loop tuning, interlocks, permissives, sequences) under strict MOC procedures.
    • Manage alarm rationalization and limit settings to reduce nuisance alarms and improve operator effectiveness.
    • Coordinate factory and site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT) for control system changes and expansions.
  • Instrumentation
    • Own the lifecycle of field instruments, including selection, installation, calibration, loop checks, diagnostics, and replacement.
    • Typical devices include DO, pH/ORP, turbidity/SS, ammonium/nitrate, chlorine, flow (magnetic/ultrasonic), pressure, level (radar/ultrasonic), vibration, temperature, and gas detection instruments.
  • Profibus DP/PA & Industrial Communication
    • Ensure Profibus DP/PA network reliability, including topology design, segment diagnostics, termination, shielding/earthing, redundancy, spur lengths, baud rates, device addressing, and GSD management.
    • Use diagnostic tools (e.g., bus analyzers) to identify noise, reflections, voltage drops, telegram errors, and intermittent faults.
    • Integrate field devices via Profibus PA couplers/links, gateways, and interfaces to ABB DCS/SCADA; maintain and update device libraries.
    • Collaborate with electrical and control teams on EMI mitigation, cable routing, and panel/earthing standards.
    • Support interfaces with MCCs/VFDs, PLC skids, and plant SCADA/IMS/CMMS systems.
  • Safety, Compliance & Cybersecurity
    • Ensure all DCS/SIS activities comply with plant safety standards, IEC requirements, and cybersecurity policies.
    • Strengthen OT cybersecurity through access control reviews, patch management, and secure network segmentation.
    • Develop a long-term DCS roadmap covering upgrades, expansions, and software/hardware obsolescence.

Qualifications

You're a Great Fit if You Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation & Control, Electrical, Electronics, or a related engineering field
  • 5–10 years of experience in process automation, with strong hands‑on expertise in ABB DCS/SCADA systems within water, wastewater, or similar process‑plant environments
  • Proven experience in Profibus DP/PA commissioning, troubleshooting, and advanced diagnostics
  • Solid background in instrumentation for STP processes, including work in hazardous and corrosive (H₂S‑prone) environments
  • Familiarity with SIS/ESD systems (e.g., ProSafe‑RS), alarm management practices, loop tuning, and historian/reporting tools
  • Experience working with CMMS platforms and IMS documentation requirements

About BESIX

A multidisciplinary group with over 110 years’ experience.

Since first going into action in 1909, the BESIX Group has over the years grown into a multidisciplinary company with a leading position in its markets: construction, property development and concessions. This wide-range expertise enables us to handle every aspect of a project, from financing over designing and building to operating and maintaining.

BESIX Contracting specializes in construction, infrastructure and marine works, often in contracts with a high level of complexity. In Benelux and France, the Group’s regional affiliates BESIX Infra, Vanhout, Wust, Cobelba, Jacques Delens and Lux TP ensure a strong presence and a local approach. With Franki Foundations, Socogetra, Sanotec and Van den Berg, the Group offers specialist niche solutions for the building market like deep foundations, geo-engineering, road construction, water treatment and cable and pipeline construction.

Backed by its experience in its home markets, BESIX has built up strong positions outside Europe. A typical example is the Middle East, where over a 55 year period BESIX has built up an impressive portfolio. In 2018, BESIX strengthened its position in Australia by acquiring, through a public takeover bid, all the shares of construction company Watpac Ltd.

In 2018 the Group achieved sales revenues of over EUR 2.5 billion. The Group employs more than 15,000 persons in 26 countries across 5 continents.
